Spring roundup: Cespedes powers Mets past Marlins

Yoenis Cespedes hit a towering three-run homer to lead the New York Mets to a 10-3 victory over the Miami Marlins on Sunday at Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Cespedes' second-inning blast off Miami right-hander Tyler Cloyd cleared the left-field fence by more than 30 feet. He went 2-for-3 and scored twice as the designated hitter before being removed from the contest.

Derek Dietrich and Chad Wallach homered for the Marlins.

Kyle Tucker hit a three-run homer and Gerrit Cole pitched two hitless innings in his first outing with Houston as the Astros beat St. Louis at Jupiter, Fla. Yadier Molina and Tommy Pham hit solo shots for the Cardinals.

Right-hander Garrett Richards struck out three in two innings and allowed one run at Tempe, Ariz., as he looks back to bounce back from an injury that interrupted his 2017 season and limited him to six starts. Austin Hedges homered for the Padres.

Nationals 9, Braves 3

Right-hander Max Scherzer allowed a run and struck out three in two innings in his first spring outing and Washington cruised past Atlanta at West Palm Beach, Fla. Dansby Swanson and Carlos Franco homered for the Braves.

Cubs 12, Giants 10

Ian Happ went 2-for-2 with a homer and two RBIs and Chicago racked up 16 hits while beating San Francisco at Scottsdale, Ariz. Buster Posey had a two-run double as part of the Giants' 15-hit attack.

Brewers 5, Diamondbacks 1

Hernan Perez drove in three runs and Ji-Man Choi drilled a two-run blast as Milwaukee defeated Arizona at Scottsdale, Ariz. Diamondbacks right-hander Zack Greinke allowed one run and three hits in 1 2/3 innings in his spring debut.

Twins 5, Rays 4

LaMonte Wade doubled in the tiebreaking run in the seventh inning as Minnesota edged Tampa Bay at Fort Myers, Fla. Denard Span drove in two runs and C.J. Cron hit a solo homer for the Rays.

Yankees 8, Phillies 3

Kyle Higashioka went 3-for-3 and scored twice and Danny Espinosa drove in three runs as New York defeated Philadelphia at Clearwater, Fla. Maikel Franco hit a two-run homer for the Phillies.

Tigers (ss) 6, Blue Jays 3

Sergio Alcantara and Ronny Rodriguez each drove in two runs as Detroit knocked off Toronto at Dunedin, Fla. Gift Ngoepe homered for the Blue Jays.

Red Sox 7, Orioles 1

Blake Swihart homered and had three RBIs to help Boston sail past Baltimore at Fort Myers, Fla. Luis Sardinas had a run-scoring single for the Orioles.

Rangers 4, Rockies 2

Right-hander Matt Bush pitched two scoreless innings as he makes a bid to move from reliever to starter to help Texas down Colorado at Surprise, Ariz. Shawn O'Malley went 2-for-2 with a run scored for the Rockies.

White Sox 8, Reds (ss) 5

Matt Davidson hit a three-run homer and drove in four overall to lead Chicago past Cincinnati at Glendale, Ariz. Eugenio Suarez and Aristides Aquino homered for the Reds.

Pirates 8, Tigers (ss) 8

Kevin Kramer slugged a three-run homer and Austin Meadows hit a three-run triple to help Pittsburgh tie Detroit in a nine-inning game at Lakeland, Fla. Nicholas Castellanos, Edwin Espinal and Jason Krizan homered for the Tigers.

Indians 2, Reds (ss) 2

Jason Kipnis homered and Greg Allen clubbed a tying RBI-triple in the ninth as Cleveland and Cincinnati played to a nine-inning tie at Goodyear, Ariz. Tony Cruz recorded a two-run double for the Reds.

Athletics 4, Royals 4

Jake Smolinski slammed a three-run homer to help Oakland tie Kansas City in a nine-inning game at Mesa, Ariz. Humberto Arteaga hit a tying sacrifice fly in the ninth for the Royals.
