Sports shorts: Tokay places third in section girls wrestling

Feb. 19—The Tokay High girls wrestling team placed third at the Sac-Joaquin Section Girls Wrestling Masters Championships on Saturday at Stockton Arena.

Tokay scored 83.5 points for the third-place finish, and in doing so qualified four wrestlers to the CIF State Wrestling Championships from Thursday to Saturday at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield. The top six in each weight class advance to state.

Kayleen Tuavao went 4-0 to win the 145-pound division, pinning Emma Mallen of Marysville in the championship match.

At 135, Kelly Meehan placed second, Maliah Gomez placed fifth at 170, and Shantel Ambriz placed sixth at 105.

Lodi scored 38 points and qualified two wrestlers to the state tournament when Azaria Biegler placed fourth at 120 pounds and Jayda VanSteenberge placed fifth at 130.

Galt, with 18 points as a team, is sending one wrestler to state after Bailey Cathey placed sixth at 125.

In the boys tournament, nobody from Lodi, Tokay, Galt or Liberty Ranch qualified for state. Tokay placed 56th with 14 points.


Girls soccer D4 playoffs: Colfax 3, Liberty Ranch 0

The fourth-seeded Hawks ended their season with a shutout loss to top-seeded Colfax on Friday, to finish with a 14-6-3 record. Liberty Ranch came a win away from qualifying for the NorCal playoffs.

Colfax moves on to face No. 7 Placer in the D4 championship on Saturday at Cosumnes River College.

D4 championships postponed

The SJS D4 soccer championships, which were scheduled to be played today at Cosumnes River College in Elk Grove, have been moved back due to predicted thunderstorms in the area on Tuesday.

This includes the top-seeded Galt boys team's D4 championship against No. 3 Natomas. The girls game will be played at 9 a.m., and the boys game will be played at 11 a.m., bringing the total number of championship games to be played that day to six.
