Sports shorts: Tigers open TCAL hoops with victory

Jan. 5—The Tokay High girls basketball team opened TCAL play with a 41-35 victory over Tracy on Thursday, holding the Bulldogs to 2 points in the fourth quarter to overcome a 33-29 deficit.

Thalia Chavez led Tokay with 16 points, along with 12 from Maya Dhaliwal, 7 from Emma Mason, and 6 from Karina Hernandez. All of Hernandez's points came in that crucial fourth quarter.

Tokay (4-11, 1-0 TCAL) will play at West on Monday.

Varsity boys: Modesto Christian 64, Lodi 42

The Flames dropped their TCAL opener on Thursday, hosting the powerhouse Crusaders. Lodi (12-6, 1-1 TCAL) will play at Lincoln on Monday.

Varsity boys: Hughes Academy 57, Lodi Academy 24

The Titans lost on Thursday with 10 points from Winston Dos Reis, 4 points from Landen Lippert, 3 points, 9 rebounds and 4 steals from Ty Zinke, 3 points and 3 blocks from Andrew Kanas, 2 points from Lucas Chan and 1 point each from Cedric Johnson and Jonah Pandjaitan.

Lodi Academy (4-4) will play at Stockton Christian next Thursday.

Varsity girls: Lodi Academy 45, Hughes Academy 36

Titans won their MVL game on Thursday to improve to 4-2 overall, and will play at Stockton Christian next Thursday.

JV boys: Modesto Christian 69, Lodi 59

Jackson Butler led the Flames with 24 points in Thursday's loss, along with 11 from Xavier Davis and 6 each from Noah Munoz and Eli Souza. Lodi is 11-6 overall, and 0-2 in TCAL play.


Varsity boys: Liberty Ranch 8, Rosemont 0

The Hawks opened SVC play with a big win on Thursday, with 4 goals from Christian Suarez.

Alonso Villasenor and Essac Flores each scored twice, and Christian Ruiz had an assist. Between the pipes, Raj Pillay and Zach Wastrous split time for the clean sheet.

Liberty Ranch (2-3-2, 1-0 SVC) will play at Bradshaw Christian on Tuesday.

Varsity girls: Liberty Ranch 1, Rosemont 0

Krista Meier's second-half goal broke a scoreless tie for the Hawks' victory on Thursday, and Zia Ruppert had 2 saves for the clean sheet. Liberty Ranch (5-5-1, 2-0 SVC) will host Bradshaw Christian on Tuesday.

JV girls: Lodi 4, Tokay 0

The JV Flames shut out the rival Tigers on Thursday, with a goal each from Rebecca Starr, Elle Schallberger, Makena Richter and Bailey Nelson. Richter, Nelson and Aliyah Terran had an assist each.

Lodi is 5-4 (1-1 in the TCAL) and Tokay is 6-3-2 (0-1-1).
