Sports shorts: Busy weekend for Lodi, Tokay wrestlers

Jan. 8—The Tokay varsity boys wrestling team placed second in the Contest of Champions as Concord High over the weekend, with six medalists highlighted by a championship from David Cera at 108 pounds.

Cera went 3-0, pinning Colfax's Wesley Ellison in the quarterfinals and Castro Valley's Jacob DeGuzman in the semifinals before dipatching De La Salle's Max Mitchell, also by pin, in the championship.

At 122 pounds, Tokay's Josiah Garcia went 3-1 for third place, Jason Quinonez went 4-1 for third place at 177, Christian Morales went 4-2 for fourth place at 115, Shane Sanchez went 3-2 for fourth place at 167, and Aiden Sweetman went 4-2 for fifth place at 217.

Varsity girls: Napa Classic

Tokay had one champion and another medalist in the 141-team Napa Classic on Saturday, as Tokay placed 12th with 78 points. Lodi placed 26th with 56 points, putting one wrestler on the medal stand.

For Tokay, Kayleen Tuavao went 5-0 in the 147-pound bracket, with all five coming via pin, to win the division. Kelly Meehan went 4-2 at 142 for seventh place. Other Tokay wrestlers recording victories included Shantel Ambriz, who went 3-2 at 102, Skyla Rivera (2-2 at 132), Christina Ochoa (1-2 at 117) and Maliah Gomez (1-2 at 172).

The Lodi contingent was led by Azaria Biegler, who went 4-3 at 122 pounds to place sixth. Jocelyn Shlley went 5-2 at 117, and Jayda VanSteenberge went 5-2 at 132, though both missed out on placing. Sarah Carpenter added a 3-2 day at 127.

Galt attended with three wrestlers — Victoria Nuss went 2-2 at 117 pounds, Bailey Cathey went 2-2 at 127, and Adrian Farren went 2-2 at 132.

Varsity boys: Lloyd Engel Tournament

Lodi had a number of wrestlers competing in Escalon on Friday and Saturday, led by Ethan Warmerdam's 6-0 performance at 140 pounds.

Dominic Zazzarino (128) and John Cloyne (167) each went 4-2, Drew Luiz (134), Wesley Palmer (146) and Colin Grant (152) each went 4-3, Brody Silveria (177) and Tony Ortiz (192) each went 3-2, Grant Shipley (159) went 2-2 and Joseph Silveira (122) went 1-4.


Varsity boys: Averroes 67, Elliot Christian 39

The Eagles fell in non-league play on Saturday, with 11 points from Jeremy Nielsen, 9 points from Seth Byrd, 6 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists from Jayden Gaither, 6 points from Elliot Burton, 3 points from Robert Goodpasture Jr., and 2 points each from Preston Tackett and Jayden San.

Elliot (4-8) will open Central California Athletic Alliance play today at Venture Academy.

Varsity girls: Elliot Christian 51, Averroes 28

The Eagles started the new off on the right foot with Saturday's win to finish their preseason slate with an 8-2 record. Elliot jumps into CCAA play today at Venture Academy.

Varsity girls: Liberty Ranch 63, Union Mine 34

The Hawks opened Sierra Valley Conference play with a victory on Friday, spurred by Haley Smith's 29 points, 14 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals, all game-highs.

Madisyn Robbins also tallied a double-double for Liberty Ranch with 10 points and 10 rebounds, Sophia Felix had 10 points, Kendall Duryee hd 5, Kamrynn Blevins had 3, and Alora Lopez, Jazleen Sandhu and Summer McCoy each tallied 2 points.

The Hawks (14-4) continue league play with a home game against Bradshaw Christian today.

Varsity girls: Galt 46, Bradshaw Christian 18

The Warriors warned their second victory on Friday in the league opener, improving to 2-13 overall. Galt will host El Dorado today.

Varsity boys: Union Mine 71, Liberty Ranch 47

The Hawks opened SVC play with a loss on Friday, falling to 7-11 overall, and will play at Bradshaw Christian today.

Varsity boys: Bradshaw Christian 69, Liberty Ranch 34

The Warriors dropped to 3-12 with Friday's SVC-opening loss, and will play at El Dorado today.


JV boys: Tokay 1, Lodi 0

The JV Flames shut out the Tigers on Friday, improving to 2-7-4, and 1-0-1 in TCAL play. Tokay dropped to 0-2 in the TCAL, and 9-5-1 overall.
