Sports: Malakoff takes perfect record into playoffs
Nov. 4—Malakoff completed its clean sweep through the regular season on Friday, gobbling up Groesbeck, 52-14 in the Goats' home pasture.
They also won another Class 3A Division 1 District 8 title in the process.
The Tigers rolled up 35 by halftime behind a run and four scoring passes.
Chauncey Hogg was first on the scoreboard on a 28-yard pass from Mike Jones.
Next, Jones hit Jerrion Hall for 36 and a score and a 14-0 edge.
Junior quarterback Jones would throw for 250 yards and four scores, hitting on 14 of 18. Hogg ended with five catches for 83 yards.
Malakoff held a 14 point lead going into the second quarter which the Goats cut in half.
Up 14-7, the Tigers exploded on a 63-yard pass from Jones to Bubba Hicks. Jerrion Hall followed with 7-yard run, then Jones flipped an 18-yard pass to Garcia.
Landon Boswell sealed the books on first half, by adding a 23-yard field goal.
The Tigers entered the dressing room up 38-.7.
The Tigers completed their scoring in the third with a 38-yard run by Bubba Hicks and a one-yard pop by Jerrion Hall. A fourth quarter Goats TD made the final 52-14.
Josh Garcia led the defense with 10 tackles, including three for losses. He also recovered a fumble.
Malakoff will take their 10-0 record into the bi-district game with Maypearl, a team they beat 59-0 in the 2021 playoffs.
Groesbeck, 7-3, is also headed for post season against Whitney. Whitney finished second to Grandview in District
