How, and when, sports leagues reacted to the Derek Chauvin verdict

The sports world celebrated on social media after a Minnesota jury found former police officer Derek Chauvin guilty on Tuesday afternoon.

Chauvin was found guilty of second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter for the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis last year.

It wasn’t just athletes and other prominent figures across the sports world who took to social media. Nearly every sports league issued a statement, too — though they all looked quite different.

Here’s how each league’s statement looked comparatively following the decision.

The NHL actually came first just after 5:20 p.m. ET, though the statement was extremely short.

The NBA and the WNBA came just minutes later with similar statements. Plenty of individual teams from both leagues issued their own statements shortly after, too.

While it's not a league, U.S. Soccer issued a statement three minutes after the WNBA.

Though Major League Baseball came much later, the MLBPA issued a statement at 5:45 p.m. ET.

The NWSL issued a statement at the same time.

The NFL came in just before 6:30 p.m. ET.

Major League Soccer issued its statement minutes before 7 p.m. ET.

MLB finally joined its Players Association around 7:15 p.m. ET, though it did so with a statement reminiscent of the NHL’s.

As of Tuesday night, the PGA Tour and NASCAR had not issued a statement of any kind.
