Here's a look at the scores and highlights from Friday's high school action on the SouthCoast.
SOFTBALL
New Bedford 13, Fairhaven 6
The Whalers opened the season with a non-league victory over the Blue Devils with a solid game at the plate from Amelia Davis. Davis went 3-for-3 with two singles, a double and three RBIs. Annabelle Huston had four singles and two RBIs while Belle Almeida, a freshman, had three hits and two RBIs. Hayleigh Chenard picked up the win, allowing six runs (three earned) off 10 hits and no walks while striking out 10. For Fairhaven, Aylin Haworth, a sophomore, went 3-for-3 with a triple and RBI in her first varsity start. She also had a good defensive game at third base. Ava Morison went 3-for-4 with an RBI while freshman Kaia Furtado got her first varsity hit. Arden Bradshaw was the losing pitcher. The Blue Devils (0-1, 0-0) visit Dighton-Rehoboth on Monday. The Whalers (1-0, 0-0) visit Falmouth on Thursday.
Bishop Stang 13, Seekonk 1, 6 innings
Olivia Brousseau went 2-for-3 with three RBIs to help the Spartans open the season with a win. Mikayla Brightman also went 2-for-3 with two RBIs while Grace Motto was 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Hannah Fortin scattered four hits with one walk while striking out three over six innings. The Spartans (1-0, 0-0) visit Cardinal Spellman on Tuesday.
BOYS LACROSSE
Apponequet 14, Middleboro 2
Jake Cusson had a hand in six goals, scoring four and assisting on a pair as the Lakers won their season opener. Kenny Wisniewski added three goals and two assists while Will Levrault had three goals. Harrison Lemieux chipped in with one goal and five assists. Max Anderson had five ground balls on defense. Apponequet (1-0, 0-0) visits Fairhaven on Wednesday.
GIRLS LACROSSE
Apponequet 17, Middleboro 4
Cecelia Levrault had five goals while Emilia Keane and Jayleigh Haworth both had four goals to lead the Lakers to a season-opening win. Addie Taylor chipped in with two goals and Celia Hiller and Abby Menendez had one goal each. Allison Arruda had seven saves in net for the Lakers. Apponequet (1-0) hosts Fairhaven on Tuesday.
Bishop Stang 18, Seekonk 5
Sophie Doucet had a strong all-around game with three goals, three assists and four draw controls to lead the Spartans to a win in their season-opener. Sydney Plouffe had six goals and one assist while Julia Pelczarski chipped in with three goals and two draw controls. Molly Kearney (one goal, two assists), Ava Jackson (two goals), Caroline Hopkins (two goals, one assist) and Teal Galligan (one goal, two assists) also contributed offensively while Bella Baptiste had seven saves. Great defense from Caroline Eldredge, Izzie Bromage, Ava Meehan and Addie Dumont were strong on defense. Stang (1-0, 0-0) hosts Dartmouth on Monday.
New Bedford 8, Barnstable 5
Tatum Reis notched five goals on Thursday to power the Whalers to a win in their season opener. Hannah Blanchard added two goals while Vanessa Bucha had one. Anette Bennett-Tucker made eight saves. “Great performance by the defense,” said coach Erin Rezendes. New Bedford (1-0) hosts Middleboro on Thursday.
BOYS VOLLEYBALL
New Bedford 3, Xaverian 0
Carter Barbosa dished out 25 assists for a balanced offensive attack as the Whalers opened the season with a 25-23, 25-21, 26-24 win. Nick Rosa and Ronis Ayala have seven kills apiece while Dilson DaCosta Texeira had nine. Rylan Brody recorded 10 service points and Davon Centeio had seven digs, three aces and seven service points. The Whalers (1-0, 0-0) visit North Quincy on Monday.
