South Dakota Prep Media basketball polls for Feb. 26: Kernels top final Class AA boys rankings

Feb. 26—MITCHELL — With postseason action now upon all six classes, this week marks the final South Dakota Prep Media basketball poll of the 2023-24 season.

This week's final set of rankings featured Class AA boys and girls with Class A and B boys, all of which wrapped up their regular seasons last week. Class A and Class B girls, which started region tournament play last week, were not voted on in the final poll.

Mitchell (Class AA boys), Sioux Falls Christian (Class A boys) and O'Gorman (Class AA girls) all finished as unanimous No. 1s in the final edition of the polls. Castlewood (Class B boys), Flandreau (Class A girls) and Centerville (Class B girls) topped the remaining classes.

Here are this week's polls and a breakdown of the most recent changes.

The South Dakota Prep Media basketball polls for the week of Feb. 26, 2024, are listed below, ranking the top-five teams in each class. First-place votes are indicated in parentheses and teams are ranked by total points received.

1. Mitchell (16), 19-1, 80; 2. Harrisburg, 17-3, 64; 3. Brandon Valley, 15-5, 45; 4. Sioux Falls Washington, 13-7, 26; 5. Sioux Falls Roosevelt, 14-6, 21.

Others receiving votes: Watertown 4.

Standing tall: During the final two weeks of the regular season, No. 1 Mitchell defeated No. 3 Brandon Valley, No. 4 Sioux Falls Washington and No. 5 Sioux Falls Roosevelt to cement its place atop the Class AA boys rankings. The Kernels enter the postseason alongside No. 2 Harrisburg as the only two teams with fewer than five losses.

Cossacks climb: Sioux Valley moved up from No. 5 to No. 4 in the final Class A boys rankings despite being idle, benefitting from the lone loss by a ranked team to an unranked team this week. Dakota Valley, which fell to Groton Area 71-54, slipped from No. 4 to No. 5. The Class A boys rankings end the year with the same group of five teams comprising the top five places for seven straight weeks.

Others receiving votes: Leola/Frederick Area 8, Viborg-Hurley 3, Dell Rapids St. Mary 1.

Crowded crew: Though the Class B boys top five did not change this week, the programs at the top of the rankings are closely clustered in the seed points standings. White River, at No. 1 in seed points, is separated from No. 6 Leola/Frederick Area by exactly one point, with De Smet, Castlewood, Wessington Springs and Howard sandwiched in between.

Pierre push: After making its return to the Class AA girls top five for the first time since the preseason last week, the Governors moved up one more time to finish at No. 4. Pierre defeated Sioux Falls Jefferson 51-47 last week, spurring the two programs to trade places with the Cavaliers now at No. 5. In the Class AA SoDak 16, Pierre slotted in as the No. 5 seed, while Jefferson is No. 4.
