South Carolina football adds commitment from four-star 2024 QB recruit Dante Reno

South Carolina began to build its 2024 recruiting class with style on Saturday with four-star quarterback Dante Reno becoming the first to commit to the Gamecocks for that cycle.

He made his announcement on CBS SportsHQ.

Reno (6-foot-1, 215 pounds) is from Fiskdale, Massachusetts and plays at The Loomis Chaffee School in Windsor, Connecticut. He's ranked No. 282 overall and No. 18 at his position for his class by the 247Sports Composite.

He also had North Carolina State, Purdue, Kentucky, Wake Forest and Virginia as finalists. His other offers include Mississippi, Vanderbilt, Louisville, Wisconsin, Georgia Tech, Iowa, Iowa State, Houston and West Virginia.

The Gamecocks offered Reno in December of 2021 and he's made multiple visits to campus, including last weekend.

"On the first visit we had it felt like home for me and my family," Reno said at his announcement. "Then we went back down there a second time and I talked to everyone. Then we took a couple of months off from the whole recruiting process. Everything we went through as a family going on all the visits and making sure we saw the right people, we came to choose South Carolina and we feel at home."

His father, Tony Reno, is beginning his 11th season as Yale's coach and has won two Ivy League championships. He played free safety for Worcester (Massachusetts) State from 1993-96.

"Obviously, me being a coach's kid I have a little different outlook than most kids have on the whole recruiting process," Reno said.

As for what he's working the most on he said, "Making sure I'm the best teammate I can possibly be and go win a bunch of games. That's my biggest thing, but also improving my accuracy from last year and completion percentage. But just making sue we're winning games because that's the only thing that matters. Checking all those boxes."

USC doesn't have any quarterback committed for the current recruiting cycle and has extended three offers at the position. Four-star Dylan Lonergan (93rd overall and ninth quarterback) from Snellville, Georgia has USC, Stanford and Alabama as his finalists. Three-star Carson Black (1,086th overall and 58th the position) from Nation Ford in Fort Mill joins Eli Holstein, who has committed to Alabama.

Lonergan is scheduled to announce his choice on July 12.

The Gamecocks added two high school quarterbacks in the last cycle including Tanner Bailey, a Gordo, Alabama recruit and highest signee of the program's 2022 class at No. 220 overall. Braden Davis (433rd overall) from Wilmington, Delaware also signed and USC added high-profile Oklahoma transfer quarterback Spencer Rattler, a former five-star recruit.
