Vikings acquire No. 23 pick in 2024 NFL Draft in trade with Texans

It seems as if the Vikings are going to be aggressive in their pursuit of their next quarterback.

In a splash move on Friday, the Vikings acquired the No. 23 overall pick from the Houston Texans in a trade that gives them more ammunition heading into next month’s NFL draft. Since the Vikings already have the No. 11 pick, they now have a pair of first rounders, which could help them move up in the draft if they can find a willing partner.

The full terms of the trade feature the Vikings getting the No. 23 pick and the No. 232 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, with the Texans getting the No. 42 pick and the No. 188 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, as well as a second rounder in the 2025 NFL Draft.

The initial reaction is that general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah is working on something even bigger here. It’s no secret that the Vikings are looking to find the successor to franchise quarterback Kirk Cousins after losing him to the Atlanta Falcons this week.

Notably, the Vikings have never selected a quarterback in the Top 10. As of right now, the highest QB selection in franchise history is Daunte Culpepper, who was taken with the No. 11 pick in 1999.

There are some options that could make sense for the Vikings this time around.

If the Vikings are able to swing a deal with, say, the Washington Commanders, who have the No. 2 pick, or the New England Patriots, who have the No. 3 pick, they could select a top quarterback like Drake Maye out of UNC or Jayden Daniels out of LSU. The biggest issue with that is the fact that the Commanders and the Patriots likely have interest in both players.

If the Viking miss out on Maye and Daniels, there is also belief they are very intrigued by J.J. McCarthy out of Michigan, so they could move up to make sure they don’t miss out on him.

Though the Vikings signed journeyman quarterback Sam Darnold as a bridge from the present to the future, head coach Kevin O’Connell likely wants to pick the next player in charge of leading his offense. Let’s just say the Vikings might not be done wheeling and dealing.

Here’s a snapshot of all the picks the Vikings have in the 2024 NFL Draft:

  • No. 11 (first round)

  • No. 23 (first round)

  • No. 108 (fourth round)

  • No. 129 (round round)

  • No. 157 (fifth round)

  • No. 167 (fifth round)

  • No. 177 (sixth round)

  • No. 230 (seventh round)

  • No. 232 (seventh round)
