Former Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs architect Theo Epstein spoke recently with Mets owner Steve Cohen and agreed that Epstein will not become the Mets president of baseball operations.

“Steve and Theo spoke,” a source familiar with the conversation told SNY. “They had a good conversation and both agreed that this was not the right opportunity.”

For weeks, our reporting has been that the mutual interest was overstated. Epstein was not at the top of the Mets list, and he wasn’t eager to jump from his current job at Major League Baseball.

The conversation between Epstein and Cohen played out exactly that way, according to the source. It was respectful and cordial, but the sides didn’t sense a fit.

There continues to be optimism that Oakland Athletics president Billy Beane is a real possibility, sources said on Wednesday. Milwaukee Brewers president David Stearns is considered a long shot.
