On Monday, the Indianapolis Colts got the news they feared: Starting running back Marlon Mack suffered a torn Achilles in the Colts’ 27-20 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, a source confirmed to Yahoo Sports.

Mack, 24, has been the Colts’ starter in the backfield for the last three seasons, scoring 18 touchdowns the last two years and posting a career year in 2019, rushing for 1,091 yards. The timing is particularly unfortunate, considering Mack is in a contract year.

NFL Network reported the news first.

He was replaced on Sunday by third-year pro Nyheim Hines, who looked swift in rushing seven times for 28 yards and a touchdown and, most notably, catching all eight of his targets for 45 yards and another score.

But with Hines primarily being a receiving back, the Colts will also rely on powerful second-round pick Jonathan Taylor to carry the load. Taylor rushed nine times for 22 yards and caught all six of his targets for 67 yards on Sunday. He was a star at Wisconsin, rushing for 6,174 yards — the second-most all-time in the Big 10 — despite playing only three seasons.

The Colts will try to bounce back and get their first win of the season Sunday at home against the Minnesota Vikings, who also lost their season opener.
