Source: Chiefs sign former Browns receiver Antonio Callaway to reserve-futures deal
Talented but mercurial receiver Antonio Callaway has found a new home.
Callaway, a fourth-round draft pick of the Cleveland Browns in 2018, has signed a reserve-futures deal with the Kansas City Chiefs, a source told Yahoo Sports.
Callaway, 24, fell in the draft after a tumultuous college career at Florida, but the Browns bet on their ability to keep the 5-foot-11, 200-pound wideout on track so they could cultivate his game-breaking potential. He showed flashes as a rookie, catching 43 passes for 586 yards and five touchdowns, but was suspended twice in 2019 for violating the league’s substance abuse policy, and was released by Cleveland in November 2019.
Callaway signed with the Miami Dolphins’ practice squad in September while he served a suspension for his past issues. The club released him in late December after he caught two passes for 20 yards in five games.
Only players who are not on an NFL team’s active roster at the conclusion of the regular season are eligible for these contracts, which essentially allows the player to try out during the offseason. The team also signed former Washington State quarterback Anthony Gordon to a reserve-futures contract on Tuesday.
The Chiefs face the Browns on Sunday in the AFC divisional round.
