Sony Michel is the new guest speaker at the Coastal Empire High School Sports Awards, presented by Georgia Ports, Monday, June 5 at the Johnny Mercer Theatre. The show is produced with support from Chatham Orthopaedic Associates.
Michel, a two-time Super Bowl champion running back, replaces Nolan Smith, who became unable to attend.
“I am excited to now host the Coastal Empire High School Sports Awards and celebrate all of these wonderful student-athletes,” said Michel, who played in college at Georgia. “These kids have worked really hard to get here, and I am honored to help recognize their dedication and diligence.”
Michel was a first-round pick in 2018 by the New England Patriots, going on to win the Super Bowl that season by defeating the Los Angeles Rams. He broke the NFL record for most rookie playoff rushing touchdowns, scoring five between the divisional and conference championship games. He also scored the only touchdown in Super Bowl LIII, rushing 18 times for a game-leading 94 yards.
After a trade brought him to the Rams in 2021, he was part of a Super Bowl winning team that year as they beat the Cincinnati Bengals. After playing with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2022, he has 3,243 career rushing yards in five seasons. He is presently a free agent.
At Georgia, he rushed for more than 1,000 yards in 2015 and 2017. In the Rose Bowl College Football Playoff Semifinal on New Year’s Day 2018, he won the game vs. Oklahoma with a 27-yard direct snap touchdown in overtime. He ran 11 times for 183 yards and three scores, as well as catching four passes for 41 yards and another score in that game.
