Somerset County top baseball, softball, tennis, track and field performers for April 25-28

Athlete of the Week

Berlin Brothersvalley junior pole vaulter Lana Fairman was selected Daily American Somerset County Female Athlete of the Week while North Star senior baseball player Garrett Huzsek earned Male Athlete of the Week honors for their efforts April 18-23.

Fairman won the pole vault competition at the Appalachian Invitational, clearing 8 feet 6 inches.

Meanwhile, Huzsek went 6-for-8 with five runs scored in the Boswell Area Jaycees High School Baseball Classic to earn MVP honors on April 23.

Thursday

Baseball

Shanksville-Stonycreek 9, Berlin Brothersvalley 8: Zion Manthey went 3-for-5 and delivered the game-winning hit as the Vikings walked-off the Mountaineers.

Ty Walker had three hits, three RBIs and scored the winning run. Christian Musser produced three hits, two RBIs and two runs scored. He picked up the win in relief.

Caleb Leonard went 3-for-3 with a run for Berlin. Pace Prosser doubled and scored a run.

Chestnut Ridge 3, North Star 0: In Boswell, Cayden Turner and Braden Livingston each had a hit in the Cougars' non-conference setback to the Lions.

Conemaugh Township 10, Blacklick Valley 2: In Davidsville, Tyler Weber delivered two doubles and three RBIs as the Indians bested the Vikings.

Jackson Byer had a hit, three RBIs and a run for Conemaugh Township. Brady Kist added two hits and three runs. Luke Weber pitched six innings to earn the win.

Windber 12, Ferndale 4: In Johnstown, Andrew Scalia had two hits and three RBIs to guide the Ramblers past the Yellow Jackets.

John Shuster tallied two hits and two RBIs for Windber. Aiden Gray and Joe Reynolds added two hits. Jake Vargo picked up the win on the mound.

Meyersdale 25, Shade 0: In Cairnbrook, Braden Kretchman produced three hits and five RBIs as the Red Raiders pummeled the Panthers in three innings.

Ryan Sechler had four hits and two RBIs. Tyler Sandy, Matt Boyce, Tyler Geiger, Dylan Teets, Kameron Kennell and Bradin Schrock all drove in two runs. Schrock was the winning pitcher, striking out four.

Somerset 13, Ligonier Valley 0: In Somerset, Zane Hagans had three hits, three RBIs and two runs scored as the Golden Eagles blanked the Rams in five innings.

Spencer Marteeny tallied two hits, including a home run, three RBIs and a run scored. He threw four innings on no-hit ball.

Softball

Meyersdale 3, Shade 2: In Cairnbrook, Zoe Hetz hit an RBI single in the 10th inning to propel the Red Raiders past the Panthers.

Izabella Donaldson gave up two runs, one earned on three hits and struck out 25 to earn the win. Shelby Hetz and Amber Long each hit RBI doubles.

Lucy Mincek had an RBI double for Shade. Tara Corradini struck out eight in the loss.

Ferndale 3, Windber 2: In Windber, Angelina Wagner struck out 13 as the Yellow Jackets knocked off the Ramblers.

Gina Gaye struck out 12 in the loss.

Central 17, Somerset 0: In Somerset, Kylie Walker and McKenna Sheeler managed the only two Golden Eagle hits in their three inning setback to the Dragons.

Tennis

Somerset 5, Windber 0: In Somerset, Liam Egal and Grayson Yutzey earned singles victories as the Golden Eagles blanked the Ramblers.

Mason Chabol and Kai Petrosky as well as Alven Huang and Isaac St. Clair picked up doubles wins.

Wednesday

Baseball

Somerset 4, Westmont Hilltop 2: Spencer Marteeny had the lone RBI as the Golden Eagles doubled up the Hilltoppers.

Ethan Hemminger had two hits for Somerset. Hunter Krotzer pitched 4 2/3 innings allowing one unearned run on four hits, no walks and striking out four. Eric Harris worked 2 1/3 innings of relief to earn the win. He gave up one run on two hits and struck out two.

Rockwood 6, Shanksville-Stonycreek 4: In Rockwood, Hunter Whipkey had two hits and three RBIs, including a go-ahead 2-run double to lead the Rockets past the Vikings.

Andrew Weaver had two hits, including a home run and two RBIs for Rockwood. Carson Modrak pitched six innings allowing four runs, two earned on six hits and one walk, striking out five. Luke Beahr picked up the save.

Zion Manthey had a hit and two RBIs for Shanksville. Ian Fox added two hits, including a home run. He allowed six runs and struck out five in the loss.

North Star 6, Conemaugh Valley 5: In Boswell, Garrett Huzsek went 2-for-5 with three RBIs including the game winner as the Cougars took down the Blue Jays in eight innings.

Huzsek pitched five innings and struck out seven. Connor Yoder earned the win in relief, allowing four runs on three hits. Andy Retassie drove in two runs.

Softball

Berlin Brothersvalley 16, Conemaugh Township 12: In Davidsville, Evelyn Black went 3-for-3 to guide the Mountaineers to a triumph over the Indians.

Kassidy Smith, Haylee Speicher, Mikaela Huston and Sadie Snyder all had a multi-hit game for Berlin.

Olivia Weyandt went 3-for-5, including a 3-run home run and four RBIs for Conemaugh Township. Abby Kniss hit two solo home runs. Natalie Kimmel and Meghan Leasure each added two hits.

Rockwood 8, Shanksville-Stonycreek 7: In Rockwood, Kaitlyn Pletcher scored on a wild pitch in the seventh as the Rockets edged the Vikings.

Kaitlyn King reached base four times and scored three runs for Rockwood.

Lindsay Frazier homered and doubled for Shanksville. Josie Snyder had two hits, including a triple and two runs scored. Kori Boozer added two hits.

Shade (15)(17), Turkeyfoot (5)(4): In Confluence, the Panthers swept a doubleheader over the Rams.

In Game 1, Reese Koback went 3-for-3 with a double for Shade in a five inning victory.

Brooke Snyder had two hits and two RBIs for Turkeyfoot. Avery Stimmell added two hits.

In Game 2, Emily Rapsky drove in three runs as the Panthers claimed a four inning win. Cassidy Mauger had two hits and an RBI.

Kate Grove plated two runs for Turkeyfoot. Kya King went 3-for-3.

Conemaugh Valley 31, North Star 6: In Ferrellton, Kayley Brant had three hits, two RBIs and a run scored in the Cougars' four inning setback to the Blue Jays.

Eliza Sheetz recorded two hits, two RBIs and a run scored for North Star.

Westmont Hilltop 7, Somerset 2: Abby Grosholz went 2-for-3 with two RBIs in the Golden Eagles' setback to the Hilltoppers.

Kylie Walker and Willa Sharbaugh each had two hits for Somerset.

Tennis

Bedford 5, Windber 0: In Windber, the Ramblers were blanked by the undefeated Bisons.

Track and field

Berlin Brothersvalley girls sweep, boys drop a pair: The Berlin girls topped Rockwood 103-39 and Blacklick Valley 79-46 to move to 5-2 on the season.

Gracie Sechler won the 200- and 400-meter dash, triple jump and was a member of the winning 1600-meter relay team along with Hartley VanGilder, Morgan Twombly and Alivia Coughenour. VanGilder also won the 800 and 1600 run.

In the boys' meet, Rockwood bested Berlin 87-50 while Blacklick Valley defeated the Mountaineers 83-62.

Caden Montgomery won the 800 and 1600 run as well as the triple jump for Berlin.

Tuesday

Baseball

Somerset 4, Central Cambria 0: In Ebensburg, Brad Bruner tossed five innings, allowing three hits, one walk and striking out three as the Golden Eagles blanked the Red Devils.

Landon Strelko and Aiden VanLenten each had an RBI while Spencer Marteeny and Bryce Mulhollen had the lone hits for Somerset. Eric Harris did not allow a hit in two innings of relief to earn the save.

Meyersdale 15, Northern 0: In Meyersdale, Marcella Dupre went 4-for-4 including a home run and two doubles as the Red Raiders rolled to a four-inning non-conference victory.

Zoe Hetz tallied three hits, including a home run. Izabella Donaldson also had three hits. She tossed a complete game, allowing just two walks and striking out nine.

Somerset 11, Chestnut Ridge 4: In New Paris, Brad Bruner tallied three hits, including a double, triple and four RBIs to power the Golden Eagles past the Lions.

Bryce Mulhollen had two hits, including a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored for Somerset. Callen Miller drove in two runs. Zane Hagans two hits, including a double.

Aiden VanLenten and Spencer Marteeny each pitched three innings and combined for eight strikeouts.

Berlin Brothersvalley 17, Hyndman 2: Pace Prosser and Cooper Huston each drove in three runs as the Mountaineers cruised to a three-inning win.

Cory Jose had four hits and two RBIs for Berlin. Craig Jarvis tallied three hits and two RBIs. Caleb Leonard and Carson Webreck each plated two runs. Hayden Hutzell pitched an inning allowing two runs on one hit, four walks and struck out two.

Conemaugh Valley 15, Turkeyfoot 0: In East Taylor Township, Noah Heltzel tossed a no-hitter, including seven strikeouts as the Blue Jays rolled past the Rams in three innings.

Softball

Rockwood 11, Berlin Brothersvalley 10: In Berlin, Sydney Beals hit a double, triple and drove in two runs as the Rockets edged the Mountaineers.

Kaitlyn King hit a 2-run double. She struck out eight to earn the win.

Mikaela Huston had three hits, including a triple, three RBIs and three runs scored for Berlin. McKenzie Moore tallied two hits and three RBIs. Hayley Trent added two RBIs

Meyersdale 20, North Star 0: Shelby Hetz hit two home runs, had five RBIs and scored three runs to lead the Red Raiders in a romp of the Cougars in three innings.

Jessica Daughton and Marcella Dupre each homered and recorded two RBIs. Amber Long and Izabella Donaldson combined for a no-hitter.

Chestnut Ridge 7, Somerset 0: In Somerset, Kylie Walker and McKenna Sheeler had the Golden Eagles' only two hits of the game in a setback to the Lions.

Conemaugh Valley 20, Turkeyfoot 5: In East Taylor Township, Maleigha Younkin hit a home run in the Rams' three inning setback to the Blue Jays.

Kaitlyn Vogel and Brooke Snyder each had an RBI for Turkeyfoot.

Track and field

Windber sweeps Portage: The Ramblers rolled past the Mustangs 110-35 in the boys' meet while the Windber girls topped Portage 82-66.

Dominic Bifano won the discus and javelin for Windber. Gino Flori broke a 40-plus year old school record in the shot put. Nick Dom won the 100- and 200-meter dash.

In the girls' meet, Riley Brubaker won the high jump, triple jump and long jump for Windber. Shannon Tokarsky won the 100 and 300 hurdles and was a member of the 1600-meter relay team along with Anna Steinbeck, Sami Toki and Rylee Ott. Toki also won the 400 dash and was a member of the 3200-meter relay team along with Ott, Paige Bennethum and Audrey Hart.
