Social media reacts to defensive coordinator Tony White staying at Nebraska

Nebraska football received some good news on Monday morning. The UCLA Bruins have hired DeShawn Foster as their new head coach, meaning that defensive coordinator Tony White will be staying… for now.

White was considered a top candidate for the job after Bruins head coach Chip Kelly departed the program to accept the offensive coordinator position with Ohio State. Last season under White, the team finished 11th nationally in total defense, their best finish since 2010.

The Blackshirts also held opponents to 14 points or fewer in eight games last season and placed 13th in scoring defense at 18.3 points per game. The defensive coordinator was rewarded for his unit’s work; during the offseason, he renegotiated his contract, which increased his salary from $1 million to $1.6 million per year.

During the offseason, he also received head coaching interest from San Diego State and a look from USC in what would have been a lateral move to defensive coordinator. Tony White will be a head coach in college football, but for now, Matt Rhule and company are thrilled to have him remain in Lincoln for the 2024 season.
