'Evil behaviour' but China's free-scoring Wei tipped for Europe

Wei Shihao was accused of "evil behaviour" and suspended last year for breaking an opponent's leg, but a lightning start to the season means he could be China's next export to Europe. China has a population of 1.4 billion but is hardly blessed with football talent, with Wu Lei its best player. Wei needed just seven minutes to stamp his mark on the coronavirus-delayed season, cutting in from his favoured position on the left and bending the ball in with his right foot in a 2-0 win over Shanghai Shenhua.

Alaves appoint former Sevilla boss Machin as new head coach

Deportivo Alaves have appointed former Sevilla and Espanyol manager Pablo Machin as their new head coach to replace Juan Ramon Lopez Muniz, the La Liga club announced on Wednesday. Muniz had taken charge of Alaves at the back end of the 2019-20 season and guided them to a 16th-place finish despite managing just one win in four games.

Espanyol want La Liga relegation cancelled amid Segunda chaos

Espanyol called on La Liga to cancel their relegation on Monday as the end to the season in Spain continues to prove problematic following a spike in cases of coronavirus. Despite finishing bottom of the table, Espanyol said in a statement the run-in had been "undoubtedly unfair in a sporting sense given the last stage of the league was not competed in the same, equal conditions as before the suspension". Promotion and relegation between Spain's top two divisions has become a thorny issue after the Segunda match between Fuenlabrada and Deportivo La Coruna on the final day could not go ahead due to several Fuenlabrada players testing positive for coronavirus.
