Hokies' #1 draft pick Daniel Pereira starts in Austin FC's MLS debut
Matthew McConaughey. But for the Virginia Tech alumni base, Austin FC is the club that used the #1 draft pick in the 2021 MLS Draft to select the Hokies standout midfielder, Daniel Pereira. After two seasons in Blacksburg, Pereira opted to turn pro and became the first Virginia Tech player and Venezuelan to top an MLS draft class.

The Covid-19 pandemic has seen fans kept at arms length so far and there will not be Austinites heading west to be in attendance for the club's first MLS game on Saturday at LAFC - they instead have had to go to Plan B. Matt Barbour sits on the board of supporters' group Austin Anthem and is one of a number of fans busy at work in developing chants, organising watch parties and orchestrating future tifos.
