That's all for today. Thank you for following our live coverage. Until next time, goodbye!
Real will want to get this result out of their system as soon as possible with a huge LaLiga showdown against Barcelona on Saturday to look forward to. As for Shakhtar, they travel to Vorskla in the Ukrainian Premier League on the same day.
Shakhtar Donetsk have held on for a famous victory at Estadio Alfredo di Stefano after inflicting a 3-2 defeat on Real Madrid. The visitors surged into a shock 3-0 lead at half-time, but were pegged back to 3-2 as Real responded after the break. The hosts thought they had snatched a point courtesy of Federico Valverde's deflected stoppage-time strike, but it was rightly disallowed for offside. Shakhtar go top of Group B for a few hours at least, as Internazionale and Borussia Monchengladbach do battle later.
FULL-TIME: REAL MADRID 2-3 SHAKHTAR DONETSK
NO GOAL! OFFSIDE! Late drama as Valverde's deflected shot appears to have got Real out of jail. However, an offside Vinicius was standing in front of Trubin and clearly obstructing his view when the ball skidded past him. After consulting with VAR, the referee rightly rules out the equaliser.
Another change for the visitors sees Antonio replaced by Bohdan V'Yunnik.
Another change for the visitors as Solomon makes way for Vitao.
We are into the first of three additional minutes at the end of this game. Can Shakhtar hold on, or will Real snatch a dramatic equaliser?
Clever skill from Vinicius sees him break away down the left before delivering a low cross into the box. But Maycon is well-positioned to clear.
Militao is booked for a rash challenge on Tete.
Dentinho goes off to be replaced by Heorhi Sudakov as Shakhtar turn to the bench.
Real appeal for a penalty after a ball into the box appears to strike the arm of Khocholova. However, his arms were firmly placed at his side and the awarding of a penalty would have been very harsh in that instance.
Bondar has his name taken after the referee penalises him for time-wasting.
Shakhtar have only been beaten twice on the opening matchday in their last seven Champions League campaigns. They are eight minutes away from a famous victory here.
OFFSIDE! NO GOAL! Tete races in behind the Real defence before squaring the ball for Marlos to tuck away. However, the offside flag is raised after the Brazilian just began his initial run a fraction too early.
Chance! Mendy ghosts in at the far post to meet Vinicius' deep cross, but Korniyenko is well-placed to deflect his header behind for a corner.
Danger for Shakhtar as Valverde embarks on a jinking run into the box. He looks to find a team-mate with his cross, but the visitors clear on this occasion.
In fairness to Shakhtar, they have not shut up shop since they were pegged back to 3-2. The visitors are continuing to go forward and search for more goals that would restore their authority on proceedings.
A third change for the hosts with Toni Kroos replacing Modric.
Real have never failed to progress beyond the group stages of the Champions League. Of course, a defeat here would not be the end of the world just yet, but it would leave them playing catch-up already in Group B.
How crucial could that prove to be? At 4-2, Shakhtar would have had breathing space in this contest once more. As it is, they are now desperately holding on to their lead.
TETE HAS TO SCORE! That was a huge opportunity for Shakhtar! Tete beats the offside trap to latch onto a through ball in behind the Real defence. But the Brazilian delays his shot and waits too long, allowing Courtois to close the angle and make an important save.
Game on as we enter the final half an hour of this game! Whatever Zidane said to his player at half-time has had the desired effect so far. Can they now complete the comeback and maybe even edge their noses in front?
WHAT AN IMPACT!!! VINICIUS MAKES IT 3-2! Within moments of coming on, the Brazilian pounces on loose play in the Shakhtar defence. After winning possession, he drives into the area before drilling a low shot into the bottom corner.
Real turn to the bench as Jovic makes way to be replaced by Vinicius Junior.
WHAT A CHANCE! Shakhtar should have restored their three-goal cushion immediately. Korniyenko gets away down the left before pulling the ball back to the penalty spot, where Tete shoots wide.
Marcelo laid the ball off for Modric, who did the rest in emphatic fashion.
WHAT A GOAL!!! MODRIC PULLS ONE BACK! 3-1! That was just what Real needed as Modric skips away from a couple of challenges, before unleashing a fierce 30-yard strike into the top corner. Is this the start of the comeback?
The hosts continue to turn up the pressure and a deep cross into the box from the right flank just evades the head of Jovic.
Space opens in front of Asensio, who tries his luck with a powerful effort from distance that is on-target, forcing Trubin to beat it away to safety.
Shakhtar with a chance to break at the other end with Tete leading the charge. However, he just takes too long on the ball and Militao intercepts him.
The hosts can expect strong words from Zidane following a generally poor first-half display. They have it all to do here.
The hosts go straight onto the attack and Bondar is forced to crucially head a dangerous cross away with Benzema lurking.
What a first half for Shakhtar! After strikes from Tete, Manor Solomon and a Raphael Varane own goal, the Ukrainian champions are in dreamland at the home of the 13-time winners of this competition. Barring a disastrous second-half collapse, they are well on course for a famous victory here.
WE'RE BACK UNDERWAY! Real get the ball rolling once more.
Real turn to the bench during the break with Karim Benzema introduced in favour of Rodrygo.
HALF-TIME: REAL MADRID 0-3 SHAKHTAR DONETSK
We are going to have a single minute of stoppage time at the end of this first half.
Tete produced a delicious backheel to put the opportunity on a plate for Solomon, who gratefully and ruthlessly accepted.
SOLOMON!!! IT'S THREE! Don't scratch your eyes; this is happening! Shakhtar pull further clear following a devastating counter. Solomon finds Tete, whose clever backheel puts the midfielder clear on goal, and he calmly rolls the ball into the bottom corner.
Another brief scare for Real as Tete looks to get in behind the defence. Thankfully for the hosts, Militao is there to intercept and snuff out the danger.
With a huge LaLiga showdown against Barcelona coming up this weekend, Zidane would have wanted to avoid using the likes of Kroos, Isco and Benzema today. But the way things are going, he may have no choice but to introduce them in the second half.
Two goals in the space of five minutes have put Shakhtar in dreamland and stunned Real. There is a long way to go yet but should this scoreline remain, it would send shockwaves throughout Europe.
Asensio's frustration is evident as he catches Solomon with a trailing arm and has his name taken by the referee.
OWN GOAL!!! 2-0 SHAKHTAR! The Ukrainians are in dreamland! Tete is involved again as he cuts in from the right before his powerful shot is parried by Courtois. With Dentinho lurking, Varane looks to intervene but only succeeds in sending the ball beyond his own goalkeeper.
CHANCE! Real look to respond immediately as Marcelo's marvellous cross finds an unmarked Jovic, who heads straight at the goalkeeper from close range.
Full marks to Korniyenko, who was instrumental in that goal following a powerful run into the heart of the Real defence and subsequent lay-off for Tete to finish.
TETE!!! SHAKHTAR LEAD 1-0! The visitors take a shock lead as Korniyenko embarks on a strong run into the area from left-back. He then does well to keep the move alive by sliding in to lay the ball off for Tete, who guides it into the far corner and beyond the reach of Courtois.
Although, it is worth noting that Real have only won once in their last six home games in the Champions League. Three of those have been defeats.
Los Blancos are unbeaten in their last eight home European games against Ukrainian opposition stretching back to 1999. They also prevailed in both of their previous meetings with Shakhtar during the 2015-16 Champions League group phase - winning 4-0 at home and 4-3 away. They went on to lift the trophy that season, could that prove to be a good omen for them this year?
Real look to regain the upper hand after they are awarded a free-kick near the touchline. Shakhtar deal with Asensio's dangerous cross, before Militao is penalised for handball.
Of course, Shakhtar's European pedigree cannot be underestimated by any means. UEFA Cup winners in 2009, they reached the semi-finals of the Europa League last season before losing to Internazionale. This year was also the 21st in succession that they have qualified for any stage of the Champions League.
This is a good spell for the Ukrainian champions. They force a corner this time and Marlos' delivery is met by Bondar, but he is unable to direct his header towards goal.
Those are the chances that Shakhtar must take if they are to prevail victorious today. They have had two fantastic opportunities to open the scoring and on both occasions, Marlos should have done better in all fairness.
YOU'VE GOT TO SCORE! Real caught napping as an onside Marlos latches onto a ball over the top of the defence. The skipper is clean through but hesitates as he advances into the box, and his tame shot is kept out by Courtois.
WHAT A WASTE! Shakhtar have a magnificent opportunity to counter as they swarm forward with Marlos leading the charge. The skipper has Tete to his right, but just delays for too long because asking a lot of his team-mate with the through ball. A relief for Real as they clear their lines.
Real look to threaten again as Varane seeks out Rodrygo with a brilliantly executed crossfield ball. However, the Brazilian was unable to stay onside and is rightly penalised by the linesman.
Korniyenko is shown the first yellow card of the game after a dangerous lunge on Mendy. He can have few complaints with that one.
Real are certainly the favourites for this contest. History would certainly back up their claim on home soil, where they have only been beaten once in the Champions League group stages since 2009. That defeat came against CSKA Moscow in December 2018, albeit with Los Blancos' progress to the knockout rounds already secured.
Good save! Trubin is called into action as Asensio makes his way into the box. The winger goes for goal from a tight angle and the Shakhtar stopper is forced to palm the ball away.
Shakhtar have already adapted a deep defensive position with all players back inside their own half. They do not want to invite too much pressure from their opponents just yet.
OFF WE GO! Serbia's Srdjan Jovanovic is our referee today. He blows his whistle and Shakhtar get us underway.
The teams are out on the pitch and observing the iconic Champions League anthem. Kick-off is just moments away...
Despite lifting the trophy three times in a row between 2016 and 2018, Real have followed it up with back-to-back last-16 exits from the Champions League. They will be launch a genuine title challenge again this year.
As for Shakhtar, Luis Castro makes just a single alteration to the side that started last weekend's 5-1 rout of Lviv. Manor Solomon replaces top scorer Viktor Kovalenko, who misses out. Junior Moraes and Mykola Matviyenko remain in self-isolation after recently testing positive for Coronavirus.
Zinedine Zidane makes seven changes to the side that began Real Madrid's 1-0 defeat to Cadiz in LaLiga on Saturday. Eder Militao replaces Sergio Ramos in the heart of defence, while there are also recalls for the likes of Casemiro and Ferland Mendy. Luka Jovic leads the attack, with support from Marco Asensio and Rodrygo on the flanks. Toni Kroos, Karim Benzema and Isco are among the substitutes.
