SOCCER RANKINGS: Sutter girls move up in rankings; Lindhurst positioned in playoffs

Jan. 10—Thanks in part to its 1-0 win over Yuba City last week, the Sutter Union High girls soccer team moved up six positions to 34th in the Sac-Joaquin Section's full rankings, ahead of No. 35 Yuba City.

Sutter is 10-3 overall and 5-2 in the Pioneer Valley League — positioned in third behind Twelve Bridges and Colfax. Four PVL and Capital Valley Conference teams earn automatic berths into the postseason.

Sutter, which hosts Marysville today alongside the boys program, will get No. 13 Colfax (11-1-2, 7-0) on the road Tuesday at 6:15 p.m. in a game likely to determine Sac-Joaquin Section seeding next month. Both teams are likely in the playoffs, with Colfax positioned atop the PVL ahead of Twelve Bridges, Sutter and Lindhurst (5-5, 4-3). Marysville sits in fifth place and the first team out, two games back of Lindhurst as of Jan. 10.

MaxPreps does not poll coaches, sportswriters or fans. Nor does its staff make any judgments on the merits of any individual team. Prior season history, school size and comments on message boards are not considered in the MaxPreps Computer Rankings, MaxPreps said in a statement.

The system utilizes the huge number of game results stored in the MaxPreps database. Generally, the more a team wins, the higher the ranking. However, the system takes into account quality wins (against other highly ranked opponents) and strength of schedule, MaxPreps stated.

For example, a team's ranking is hurt more by losing to a team that is ranked below them than a team ranked ahead, according to MaxPreps.

Other factors that will affect the rankings are times when MaxPreps has incomplete or inaccurate information. MaxPreps will correct errors when they are reported. Missing scores and games can be reported on the team's MaxPreps page.

The second-highest ranked team right now in the SJS is Inderkum (15-1-1), a team that Yuba City hosts on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Honker Field. The league's top-4 are Woodcreek, Inderkum, Antelope and Roseville — the latter Yuba City travels to today for a 7:30 p.m. scheduled bout.
