Snorkeler Swims Into Giant Bait Ball of Fish in Virgin Islands

A family got up close and personal with a huge bait ball of fish while they were snorkeling in the US Virgin Islands on August 9.

Texas resident Jennifer Smolka was vacationing in Frederiksted in St Croix when she brought her son Jared snorkeling for the first time.

Footage by Smolka shows her son Jared swimming among the fish, which had gathered close together to form the bait ball, a defensive measure against predators.

“This is my 13-year-old’s first time to snorkel when we came upon a bait ball with ‘millions’ of fish. Without any prompting, he dove through the ball,” Smolka told Storyful. Credit: Jennifer Smolka via Storyful
