Sixers 3 goals: De’Anthony Melton must stabilize, lead the bench unit

In this continuing series, Sixers Wire looks at the 20 players, per Sportrac, that comprise the Philadelphia 76ers roster — 18 under contract and the two players on two-way deals — and gives each three goals for the 2022-23 season.

The new season begins on Oct. 18, and training camp begins on Sept. 27. Now is the time to begin previewing the new season of adventure that is Sixers basketball. Philadelphia will have to trim a few players because the active roster limit is 15.

This edition focuses on De’Anthony Melton who was acquired from the Memphis Grizzlies in a draft night trade back in June. Melton will be looking to bring his 3-and-D capabilities to Philadelphia and help move the team forward as they continue to chase down a championship.

For Melton, his three goals are as follows:

Stabilize the bench unit

As the Sixers head into camp, it looks like Melton will be the main ball-handler for the bench unit. That means it will fall on him to set the tone with his physical play on the defensive end and then being able to set up his teammates on the offensive end. Considering he will be playing in some lineups with the team’s shooters, he will have a lot of pressure on him to bring it every night.

Bring toughness on defense

In order for the Sixers to find success out on the floor, they will need to ensure they have some type of toughness out on the perimeter on the defensive end. Melton will have to bring that aspect to this team off the bench and bring a legitimate 3-and-D capability to this team that they have been missing for quite some time.

Bring shooting

Melton ended up shooting 37.4% from deep off the bench for the Grizz in the 2021-22 season. That type of shooting is going to serve a big purpose for the success the Sixers intend to have as they move forward with their plans. This is a solid roster on paper and Philadelphia will need everybody to step up and produce at the level and they are capable of.
