Six starters return for Lady Cougars on the diamond

Mar. 24—Coming off a 6-19 season in 2023, the Lady Cougars return eight players in 2024 looking to take a step further.

During the preseason workouts, the Lady Cougars had 15-18 players attending and preparing for the new season.

The Lady Cougars return three seniors. Molly Eden was all-conference last year. She led the team offensively, batting .575 to go with team-highs in RBIs and extra base hits. Brooklyn Powers and Paige Paton also return for their senior campaigns.

"Brooklyn played first base and designated hitter. Paige played second base and right field," Coach Lisa Huff said.

"Juniors returning are Lydia Witkemper, who caught most of last season. She will be pitching this season. Piper Phelps played third base and she will be moving to catcher. Daisy Martin pitched last year and will be playing in the infield and outfield," Coach Huff added.

Sophomores returning are versatile Samantha Cole, playing second base, outfield and catcher. Fellow sophomore Madalyn Shireman played third last year and will see time at third or shortstop this season.

South also has five freshman looking to contribute. Delaney Caplinger could see time in the circle, at first base or third base. Lyla Clark gives the Lady Cougars added quickness and plays second base and outfield. Riehana Haley is also capable of filling spots in the circle, third base and outfield. Millie Brown plays outfield and infield and Miley Ward pitches and plays outfield.

"Our goals are to improve on our record of six wins last season, finish in the top three in the conference and win a sectional title," Coach Huff said.

"We have six returning starters. We will have some inexperience also. I look for the freshman to step up into the rotation and contribute," Coach Huff added. "We have several girls that can play different positions and are willing to play where I ask them to. The girls have great attitudes and work hard at practice. We will continue to work on fundamentals and positions and will find the right rotation."

South is schedule to open the season Tuesday against Trinity Lutheran at home.
