Silva: Alvarez's new extension could be a bargain

In the wake of his massive contract extension, Drew Silva takes a look at Houston Astros OF Yordan Alvarez's offensive numbers and how it could be a bargain.

Video Transcript

- Among the very best power threats in all of baseball since he arrived in the majors in June 2019, Yordan Alvarez received a six-year, $115 million contract extension from the Astros as the calendar flipped to June here in 2022. Alvarez is fully deserving of the long-term commitment from Houston.

He's averaged 44 home runs and 127 RBIs for every 162 games played as a big leaguer with a career OPS approaching .960. And his 1.015 OPS this year ranks fourth best among all qualified hitters, behind only Aaron Judge, Paul Goldschmidt and Jose Ramirez. For reference, Goldschmidt is making $26 million this season at age 34.

Ramirez inked a new five-year deal in April with an average annual value of $24.8 million. And Judge could be seeking upwards of $300 million if or when he reaches free agency this winter at age 30. Alvarez, who's currently 24-years-old, won't get more than $20 million annually until 2026. If he keeps doing, what he's been doing, the extension could prove to be a massive bargain.
