Canadiens' Shea Weber diagnosed with sprained ankle, out 4-6 weeks
When the Montreal Canadiens traded fan favourite P.K. Subban to the Nashville Predators for Shea Weber, it was a given that the Habs were taking on a handful of risk as the already veteran defenceman touched the other side of age 30.
Those concerns over age and health manifested themselves briefly in some harrowing news for Canadiens fans on Wednesday afternoon, as Nick Kypreos reported on Twitter that Weber’s season is ‘likely over’ and his future is in question as he waits for a decision to be made regarding surgery on his ailing foot.
The Canadiens, however, disputed some of the details of Kypreos’ report.
Montreal released an update on Wednesday afternoon that the team reevaluated his injury after the swelling subsided, diagnosing Weber with a sprained ankle. Weber is expected to miss 4 to 6 weeks with the injury and is expected to make a full recovery, the team stated.
Weber’s tenure with the Canadiens has been a tumultuous one riddled with injury. He has played more than 60 games only once — his first season with the team — and has played 217 of a possible 304 games since joining the franchise. He has continued to produce in somewhat limited action, scoring 50 goals and 125 points while playing 24 and a half minutes per game for Montreal.
While his future may be up in the air, Weber still has plenty of money coming his way. The 34-year-old has six seasons at $7.857-million AAV remaining on the 14-year, $110-million deal he signed with the Predators in 2012.
