Seven area golfers advance in WPIAL individual championship

Sep. 26—Seven Lawrence County golfers kept their dream to win a WPIAL individual championship alive Monday.

Seventeen golfers from the county qualified for the first round of the WPIAL Class 2A Individual Championship, which was held at Willowbrook Country Club in Apollo.

The top 36 scores and ties advanced to the championship round, which will be hosted Oct. 2 at Butler Country Club.

Neshannock High's Matt Morelli and teammate Max Vitale shared the top score among county linksters, both with a 6-over 78 to tie for 11th place. Morelli carded a 38-40 and Vitale shot a 40-38.

Mohawk's Keigan Hopper was next in 18th place with a 39-41—80.

Laurel's Eli Bintrim sits in 23rd place with a 38-43—81 and Union's Rocco Galmarini is in 26th place with a 42-40—82.

Mohawk's Drew Wrona is 30th with a 44-39—83 and his brother Jay Wrona is 31st with a 45-39—84.

The cut score was 84.

Ellwood City Lincoln's Jordan Keller just missed the cut, taking 38th place with a 43-42—85.

Also missing the cut was Rocco Bautti (Neshannock, 47th, 86), Josh Wilkins (Mohawk, 49th, 86), Joe Campoli (Shenango, 54th, 89), Mason Hopper (Mohawk, 55th, 89), Mitch Covert (Ellwood City, 57th, 90), Carson Cappello (Ellwood City, 76th, 95), Gavin Bruce (Shenango, 78th, 97), Jaxon Rozanski (Ellwood City, 80th, 98) and Jalen Peace (Union, 83rd, 100) rounded out the field of 17 locals that participated in the event.

Volleyball

Mohawk sweeps

The Lady Warriors captured a 25-11, 25-14, 25-11 Section 1-2A road win over Aliquippa.

Sara Hampson served six aces for Mohawk and Carmen Hart was next with five. Avery Sun supplied five kills.

Mohawk won the JV match, 25-16, 25-18.

Emme Druschel served seven aces for the Lady Warriors and Avery Smiley added three. Reagan Magno slammed three kills.

Girls tennis

Lady Greyhounds prevail

Wilmington picked up a District 10, Region 1-2A win over Franklin. The match was played at Westminster College.

Mary Matyasovsky (No. 1) and Elizabeth Bersett (No. 3) picked up singles wins for the Lady Greyhounds.

The doubles tandems of Ami Hatch/Linnea Funari (No. 1) and Annalise Ramirez/Michaela/Fishel (No. 2) also scored victories.
