September is typically the busiest month of the Atlantic hurricane season. Here's why

September has been a busy month in the tropical Atlantic. Last week, Hurricane Fiona caused significant damage to several islands in the eastern Caribbean including Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic before making a final landfall as a strong nor'easter in Atlantic Canada. This week, the focus is on Hurricane Ian. As of Tuesday afternoon, the storm had maximum sustained winds of 120 mph as it neared the coast of south Florida.
