SEE IT: D.C. United's Felipe Martins wins it late with free kick originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington
Only four days removed from blasting seven goals past Toronto, D.C. United was unable to crack the Liga Deportiva Alajuense defense for 86 minutes in the first-ever Capital Cup game at Audi Field on Wednesday night.
Then, Felipe Martins did this.
With a perfect combination of power and finesse, Martins slid the direct free kick underneath the leaping Alajuense wall to fool everyone in the stadium and open the scoring.
With the Capital Cup offering United fans a glimpse of the CONCACAF flavor while MLS is on its scheduled international break, it was Martins bringing out the flair against the Costa Rican giants. Channeling his inner Ronaldinho to fool the keeper and the wall, successful free kicks under the wall are quite the rarity. For Martins, who hasn't completed a full 90 minutes in competitive action yet this season after recovering from an ACL tear last September, this should be quite the confidence booster moving forward.
It was a celebratory first of three exhibition matches in the Capital Cup, with center back Steven Birnbaum also returning to the lineup for the first time since his second ankle surgery in March.
D.C. United will look to keep this winning feeling going when they play hosts to El Salvador's Alianza on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. right here on NBC Sports Washington!
