How the SEC fared in Day 1 of NCAA regionals

The SEC has 10 teams in the 16 regional tournaments including eight hosts. The only non-hosts were Tennessee and Texas A&M and they both drew a No. 2 seed in their respectful regional.

After the dust settled on day one of the regionals. The SEC finished the day 9-1, tying the record for the most wins by a conference in one day of the tournament. (SEC went 9-0 in 2005). Thanks, Auburn, for ruining the perfect day.

The Tigers were also one of three national seeds which were upset on Day 1.

Here’s a full recap of how league teams fared during the opening round of the regionals Friday.

Kentucky 4, Ball State 0

Kentucky is off to a great start in their regional after beating Ball State 4-0 to start their road to Omaha. The Wildcats held Ball State to only three hits on the day. Kentucky will face Indiana in the winners’ bracket Saturday.

Arkansas 13, Santa Clara 6

It took Arkansas four innings to get going, but once the train started rolling, Santa Clara didn’t stand a chance. The Razorbacks outscored Santa Clara 13-4 from the fourth inning on as they rolled on to the winner’s bracket. Arkansas will take on Big 12 champion TCU on Saturday.

LSU 7, Tulane 2

A lot of people were surprised that Paul Skenes was the man on the mound for the Tigers, but it worked out. Skenes pitched the first nine-inning complete game of his career as LSU beat Tulane 7-2 and advanced to the winners’ bracket to play Oregon State.

Florida 3, Florida A&M 0

The Florida bats weren’t hot, but Jac Caglianone was as he held Florida A&M to zero runs as the Gators won 3-0. Florida will play Texas Tech in the winners’ bracket Saturday.

Tennessee 8, Charlotte 1

Tennessee took care of business against Charlotte as the Vols won 8-1. Tennessee will face Clemson in the winners’ bracket of what I call the “too much orange” regional.

Penn 6, Auburn 3

The only team in the SEC to lose yesterday was the Auburn Tigers. Penn’s social media did a tremendous job trolling Auburn, as well. The game went into extra innings and Penn scored three runs in the top of the 11th to put the Tigers away. Auburn faces elimination against Southern Miss on Saturday.

South Carolina 19, Central Connecticut 1

To say that South Carolina took care of business would be an understatement. The Gamecocks made a statement in their 19-1 win over Central Connecticut. South Carolina will play NC State in the winners’ bracket on Saturday.

Alabama 4, Nicholls 3

Nicholls gave Alabama all it could handle, but the Tide walked it off in the bottom of the ninth to send them on in the winner’s bracket. The Tide will play Troy tonight for a spot in the regional final.

Vanderbilt 12, Eastern Illinois 2

Vandy didn’t have any issues disposing of Eastern Illinois in Game 1 of the Nashville Regional. They will play Oregon in the winners’ bracket Saturday.

Texas A&M 12, Cal State Fullerton 7

Texas A&M was part of Pac-12 after dark as it played in the final game of the day. The Aggies were down early but they rallied back to take down Cal State Fullerton 12-7. They will face Stanford in the winners’ bracket Saturday.
