Prior to last season, CBS Sports‘ top-10 head coach/ quarterback duos in the NFL probably didn’t have Sean McDermott and Josh Allen anywhere near it.

At that time, McDermott was certainly respected. He brought a forgotten franchise out of the shadow of a near two-decade playoff drought, but Allen… was a different story.

Unproven, a year ago at this time no one thought very highly of the QB. One second-place finish in MVP voting later? It’s a whole new ball game and the 2021 poll CBS has run reflects that.

McDermott and Allen land at this year’s No. 6 spot. While maybe not the brightest finish on the list, part of the breakdown still explains why sixth-place is pretty good:

Allen and McDermott have a case to be even higher on this list, but debuting this high in the top 10 just showcases how good they were in 2020 — considering they are the highest duo that doesn’t have a quarterback or head coach with a championship on his resume. The Bills reached the AFC Championship Game for the first time since the 1993 season and their 13-3 record was the franchise’s best since 1991.

Helping make room for Allen and McDermott on the list are a couple of coach-QB duos that… no longer exist. Players were traded and coaches were fired, something which proves such lists are often trivial.

Still, earning recognition is always nice.
