Seahawks defeat Texans 41-38 in an instant classic
In what could be the game of the season in the NFL this year, the Seattle Seahawks defeated the Houston Texans 41-38 at CenturyLink Field.
The Seahawks (5-2) were trailing 38-34 with less than two minutes to go in the game, and the Seahawks had to drive 80 yards downfield to win the game. Russell Wilson hit Paul Richardson for a 48-yard completion, and then he hit Tyler Lockett for a 19-yard completion to move inside the redzone. That is when Wilson hit Jimmy Graham down the middle of the field for a touchdown to take the lead with 21 seconds left in the game.
Wilson completed 26 of his 41 passes for a career-high 451 yards, four touchdowns, and an interception. Wilson had to do it all because the Seahawks practically had zero run game. Wilson led the team in rushing as well, running for 30 yards on four carries. Taking out Wilson’s carries, Seattle ran the ball 17 times for only three yards.
Wilson relied on Richardson (six receptions, 105 yards, two touchdowns), Tyler Lockett (six receptions, 121 yards), and Jimmy Graham (four receptions, 39 yards, two touchdowns) to make plays in the passing game. The Texans (3-4) had no answer for the Seattle passing game, who relied on their play-action to open up throws downfield.
Deshaun Watson also had a great game, completing 19 of his 30 passes for 402 yards, four touchdowns, and three interceptions. One of Watson’s interceptions resulted in the first touchdown of the game for the Seahawks after Earl Thomas returned the interception for the touchdown. The last interception that Watson threw was on the final seconds of the game that iced the victory for the Seahawks.
Deandre Hopkins and Will Fuller were the playmakers for Watson and the Texans offense, combining for 13 receptions, 349 yards, and three touchdowns. Both had touchdown receptions longer than 50 yards, including a 72-yard catch and run touchdown by Hopkins.
K.J. Wright led the way for the Seattle defense, registering 23 total tackles, including a tackle for loss. Dwight Freeney started in his first game with the Seahawks, combing for a sack with Sheldon Richardson in the first half.
The Seahawks victory pushes their win streak to four games and moves them into a tie for first place in the NFC West with the idle Los Angeles Rams, but Seattle currently holds the tiebreaker. The Seahawks will play the Washington Redskins (3-4) at CenturyLink Field on Sunday, November 5th at 1:05 p.m. PST.
