School district apologizes after infamous Roseanne rendition of national anthem played before game
Long before her political rantings resulted in her removal from the landmark sit-com that bore her name, Roseanne Barr was making enemies of patriotic baseball fans everywhere.
Before Colin Kaepernick arrived, her 1990 rendition of the Star Spangled Banner prior to a San Diego Padres game was a prime candidate for the biggest anthem controversy in sports history.
Her shrieking, irreverent interpretation of the song that came complete with a crotch grab and a spit on the ground remains infamous to this day.
For some reason, a Delaware high school recently chose to use audio of that anthem rendition prior to volleyball match.
The Delaware News Journal reports that parents were outraged after hearing the anthem before a match between Seaford and Milford high schools.
In case you’re not familiar with this travesty, here it is in all its shameful glory.
Why would a high school use Barr’s anthem to christen a volleyball match?
It’s a good question, to which there was no answer. Only an apology and promise to do better.
The Seaford School District and Superintendent David Perrington both issued apologies.
“This event is not representative of the Seaford School District or its students, and the District will take appropriate action to ensure proper response and modification of pre-game proceedings,” the official district statement reads. “We apologize for this unfortunate event.”
Those modifications should probably entail striking random YouTube versions of the anthem from the playlist.
