Bloomington is bigger than Miami

There's some semantics and nitpicking going on here. Bloomington's population is in the neighborhood of 80,000. The University of Miami is technically in Coral Gables, which has a population a little shy of 50,000. It still has a big-city feel, with Miami proper including well over 400,000 residents and the metro area topping 6.1 million.

These classic artists from their respective regions sing about the music. Mellencamp has "R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A." and Estefan has "Conga." Best estimates have Mellencamp selling about 31 million records worldwide and Estefan 75 million. Being fluent in Spanish likely helps her.

Bloomington also boasts David Lee Roth of Van Halen. Miami has Pitbull and Rick Ross.

"Breaking Away" vs. "Scarface"

Bloomington's shining moment in the movies is the story based on IU's famous Little 500 bicycle race being conquered by some "townies" – in this case, "cutters." Miami is portrayed as drug-ridden and crime-filled in "Scarface," which has provided millions with ways to poorly imitate Tony Montana, played by Al Pacino.

Best line from each movie: Repeated shouts of "REFUND!" in "Breaking Away." There are 182 instances of a certain word we're not touching in "Scarface."

Indiana University vs. University of Miami

IU is nearing 50,000 students, including graduate schools. It is known for its music, business and media studies programs. Miami has an enrollment in the neighborhood of 20,000, and is known for its nursing and finance programs.

Bloomington vs. Miami weather

Sunday's forecast for Bloomington is partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the upper 30s. In Miami, rain is likely with a high near 80. Both areas can get hit with severe conditions. Neither a tornado nor a hurricane is fun, but South Florida avoids wintry mixes.

IU likes to trumpet its five NCAA tournament titles, and some Bloomington natives have worn the candy stripes, including Jared Jeffries, Jordan Hulls and Anthony Leal. The Hurricanes football program has won five national titles with local players including Michael Irvin and Warren Sapp.
