Sacramento Councilman Eric Guerra will run for re-election next year

Sacramento City Councilman Eric Guerra will seek re-election in 2024.

In March, four months after losing his race for state Assembly, Guerra sent an email to his past supporters to announce he is running for council again.

“In the coming years, we must ensure the promise of Aggie Square is fulfilled, and that our youth and residents are prepared for the career opportunities being created right in their backyard,” the email read, referring to the $1 billion planned UC Davis project adjacent to Guerra’s District 6.

The email outlined Guerra’s continued focus on developing affordable housing and local businesses and on addressing the homelessness crisis.

“I am honored to be able to continue to work with you and my colleagues on these vital issues for our city and region,” the email states.

Guerra, a Mexican immigrant, created a new city program to provide legal services to undocumented immigrants. He also helped spark construction of new affordable housing on vacant lots along Stockton Boulevard, including a large complex that recently broke ground at the corner of Stockton Boulevard and 22nd Avenue. He has not yet opened a large homeless shelter in his district, though his district contains several motels the city uses to shelter homeless people and families.

He ran for state Assembly in 2022 and lost to Stephanie Nguyen, formerly an Elk Grove City Council member.

Gov. Gavin Newsom in February appointed Guerra to the California Air Resources Board.

No candidates have so far started raising money to run against Guerra for the seat, which includes Tahoe Park, Little Saigon, and other parts of southeast Sacramento.

The primary election will take place March 5. If no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote, the general election will be held Nov. 5. Districts 2, 4, 8, and the mayor will also be on the ballot. Mayor Darrell Steinberg has not yet announced whether he will seek re-election, but plans to make an announcement by the end of the month.
