Sacramento City Manager gets big pay bump with base salary now at $400,000

Sacramento's city manager is raising eyebrows after his salary was raised yet another year, putting his salary at just over $400,000. His starting salary was $282,060 when he took his role in 2017. The Sacramento City Council voted Tuesday night to approve a 7.5% pay increase for Howard Chan. That means his base salary is going up from $372,700 to $400,652. Chan has gotten multiple salary bumps over the past few years. According to the California State Controller's Office, Chan is already one of the highest-paid city managers in the state. Some have said his most recent pay raise is warranted, but others told KCRA 3 that it does not make sense.
