Sabres sitting F Kane ahead of trade deadline

With the NHL's trade deadline two days away, the Buffalo Sabres opted to hold veteran forward Evander Kane out of the lineup for Saturday's game.

Kane had played in all of the team's previous 61 games this season.

"Management thought it was the best decision moving forward and the best decision for Evander," head coach Phil Housley said prior to the game.

Kane told reporters earlier this week that he expects to be traded.

"Yeah, if that's the answer you guys are waiting for," Kane said after Wednesday's practice. "I'm not going to get into what's been talked about or what hasn't been talked about, but I think you guys are all pretty smart hockey people.

"I think the hardest part is the unknown."

Kane, 26, is an unrestricted free agent this offseason. The former first-round pick has 20 goals and 20 assists while averaging just under 20 minutes of ice time a game for the Sabres this season.

Kane has played three seasons with the Sabres, who are currently last in the Eastern Conference at 18-32-11.

"It's always difficult when you come to these situations when you're taking 20 goals out of the lineup," Housley said. "I understand the business part of it."
