Rutgers men’s and women’s lacrosse received honors for last week’s performances

On Tuesday, Rutgers women’s lacrosse Cassidy Spilis was named Big Ten Midfielder of the Week, and Rutgers men’s lacrosse Tommy Mendke was ranked among the nation’s best players of the week.

Last week, Spilis recorded seven points on six goals and an assist for Rutgers women’s lacrosse in its season-opening 20-10 win over Manhattan.

Spilis’s Big Ten Midfielder of the Week honor is the sixth of her career and the eighth overall weekly conference award. She has been named Big Ten Midfielder of the Week in the three previous seasons.

After her six goals last week, Spilis is two goals away from becoming the first player in program history to record 200 career goals for the Scarlet Knights.

As for Rutgers men’s lacrosse, Tommy Mendke was ranked among the nation’s best players of the week, representing the Scarlet Knights on the USILA Team of the Week. The Rutgers defenseman joins Ross Scott as the second Scarlet Knight named to the USILA Team of the Week.

He recorded his second career start last week, registering three caused turnovers and four ground balls. Mendke and the Scarlet Knights held Stony Brook to just six goals in the first 40 minutes, capturing a 16-12 victory to improve to 2-0 on the season.
