Russell Westbrook's record-setting triple-double streak ends at 11 after fouling out in OT

At long last, Russell Westbrook’s triple-double streak has come to a close.

Westbrook fell two assists shy of his 12th straight triple-double as he fouled out in overtime before his Oklahoma City Thunder beat the Utah Jazz, 148-147 in double overtime. It was his first game not reaching that mark in 32 days.

The eight-time All-Star broke Wilt Chamberlain’s record of nine straight triple-doubles on Feb. 11 and followed that up with another triple-double against the New Orleans Pelicans in his final game before the All-Star break. But despite playing 43 minutes on Friday, he only totaled 43 points, 15 rebounds and eight assists.

Westbrook did not pick up his fifth assist until about midway through the fourth quarter, although he poured it on down the stretch with four assists in the final seven minutes of regulation. Things started to unravel in overtime when Westbrook picked up three fouls in a 124-second stretch in the first overtime period, including his sixth foul on a charge while trying to take a one-point lead.

Without Westbrook, Paul George came to the rescue. George led all scorers with 45 points and scored eight of the Thunder’s 19 points in extra time, including a beautiful floater at the last second to take a one-point lead.

Westbrook’s historic streak in context

Westbrook is averaging a triple-double for the third straight season, which is even more impressive when considering that it’s only been done by one other player once: Oscar Robertson in the 1961-62 season. Although Westbrook’s scoring is down to 22.1 points per game, his 11.1 assists and 11.3 rebounds are both career highs.

The 30-year-old has been even more impressive during his 11-game triple-double streak. Although his scoring is around his season average at 21.9 points per game, he averaged 13.5 assists and 13.3 rebounds.

Westbrook has consistently re-written the record book over the past few years, and triple-double streaks are no different. Since data became available on Basketball Reference in 1983, there have been 10 streaks of four or more triple-doubles, and Westbrook has seven of those. He also has four of the five triple-double streaks of five or more games, including two separate seven-game streaks last season.
