JARED QUAY: You play what a lot of quarterbacks over your career in the NFL. But if there was one young quarterback in the NFL that you can ever, you know, have thrown you the ball while you were playing, which quarterback would it be current day?

BRANDON MARSHALL: I like Joe Burrow. You know, I like playing with quarterbacks with an edge, right? Like, there's some guys that's just too corporate for me. You know, Joe Burrow's my cup of tea. You know, that's what I want. I want a guy that I can take back to the hood, and everybody love him, right? And that's Joe Burrow.

JARED QUAY: What's up, everybody? I'm here with 13-year NFL veteran and host of the "I Am Athlete" podcast Brandon Marshall. How are you doing, Brandon?

BRANDON MARSHALL: I'm awesome, Jay, excited to be with you guys.

JARED QUAY: Ben Roethlisberger officially retired yesterday, and I know you've been retired for a few years now. So what's the advice you could give Ben and other athletes retiring about transitioning in life?

BRANDON MARSHALL: Oh, man. I think talk therapy is critical. I don't think we understand how tough this transition is, and when Sean Payton beginning of December 2018 came in that receivers room, pulled me out, and cut me, it was devastating, right? And I laid in the bed for four days, and I was like, damn, I had everything set up. Like, I was ready for this transition.

I have millions of dollars waiting on me on television, right? Have a thriving nonprofit, a thriving for-profit or an OK for-profit at the time. And I'm still going through this mentally.

JARED QUAY: Another quarterback that people are speculating could or could not retire is Tom Brady. He says he could also play until he's 50. You think it's time for him to hang them up, or you think he may retire this year?

BRANDON MARSHALL: Well, I mean, go back years ago. He said I'm gonna play til I'm 45. I mean, are we really gonna get to 44 and stop? Like, come on. No.

Come on, this is the GOAT. He's very strategic. He knows what he wants to do. He has his whole life planned out for him until he's 120. The TB12 method, pliability is critical.

You know, he spends $3 million a year on his body. You know, I do think it was a tough year for him emotionally dealing with all the injuries and also the drama surrounding the team. But at the end of the day, this dude said he's gonna play till he's 45 and he's 44 now. No way the GOAT is walking away.

JARED QUAY: I ain't ready for him to go yet either. I ain't gonna lie to you. I don't know if I'm ready for the NFL without Tom Brady yet.

BRANDON MARSHALL: Right, right.

- None of us are.

JARED QUAY: You talked recently about taking control of your own narrative versus members of the media shaping the narrative about you. But now you're kind of a member of the media and yourself as a host of the "I Am Athlete" podcast. So How's life on the flip side of that?

BRANDON MARSHALL: Fully embracing media with "I Am Athlete" our network, and our platform, and, you know, this show and developing other shows, you know, like, what is our identity? And I think for me our identity and something that doesn't really exist in the marketplace is a safe place for athletes, you know, where athletes can come on and have the time in the space to tell their side of things or, you know, to be held accountable. Because that's the locker room. That's all we're doing is taking the locker room and filming the locker room-- those conversations that we have there.

- That's enough for y'all! See y'all next week!

JARED QUAY: Antonio Brown is the latest guest on the podcast "I Am Athlete," and you guys bring up mental health a few times in the episode. AB kind of pushed back the idea that mental health issues have impacted his behavior.

ANTONIO BROWN: Why every time something happened bad or how someone react, oh, he's crazy, there's something wrong with his mental health? There's nothing wrong with my mental health. If someone told me to get the [INAUDIBLE] out of here, I'm not passive aggressive. We both asked each other one question-- how do I maintain my mental health as a football player and still keep my integrity to get what I want?

JARED QUAY: Were you surprised by this reaction? Or, you know, you don't really want to get too much into that conversation?

BRANDON MARSHALL: Yeah. I mean, listen, I'm not surprised. I think, you know, there's over 100 million Americans that are living with something, right, and it affects everyone differently. You know, you got on one end of the spectrum it's impairment, and on the other end it's performance. So where are we at, right?

So for Antonio Brown, my thing is, you know, again, what are you trying to accomplish? And that's why we got into the conversation like, well, you're like a disruptor, you know. If you're saying nothing's wrong and you're saying you're willing to stand on your principles for what you believe in and it's going to come with all that backlash, then you're a disruptor, right? And maybe nothing's wrong, but you got to understand what's coming with that.

I don't know if that's the case. I think that, you know, when there's a consistency in behavior, you know, there needs to be a time of pause, and being still, and figuring out, OK, like, what's going on? And I think he's done that. He may not just be willing to share exactly what his process is.

ANTONIO BROWN: But it's bigger than me.

BRANDON MARSHALL: I know it's bigger than you.

ANTONIO BROWN: Because a lot of guys are going through this.

BRANDON MARSHALL: But here's what I'm saying to you is this--

ANTONIO BROWN: How do you protect your mental health as a football player in regards to getting what you want? How do you do that?

JARED QUAY: Well look, Brandon, man, I appreciate you for rushing with me today, man. Everybody at home please check out "I Am Athlete" wherever you download podcasts or on YouTube. Man, thank you for doing this for me, man. Take care.

JACKIE: What was it like when you're sitting there on your set, you're waiting to do a show, and the hours are ticking, by and your guest, Antonio, is nowhere to be seen for three hours?

BRANDON MARSHALL: Hold on, who told you that?

JACKIE: It's in the episode. You said it.

BRANDON MARSHALL: AB, you owe about a hundred push-ups too and--

ANTONIO BROWN: That's it?

BRANDON MARSHALL: --a conduct detrimental to the team. Yeah, that's three hours late.

ANTONIO BROWN: Whatever you want.

BRANDON MARSHALL: He's like, whatever you want.

Oh, I said it? Well, sheez. Oh, my goodness.
