Running Back Usage Report: Week 9

Fantasy football guru Matthew Berry has joined the team and his two shows have you covered all season long. Spend weekdays at noon with the Fantasy Football Happy Hour and then, every Sunday at 11am getting ready for kickoff with the Fantasy Football Pregame. Watch both shows live on Peacock and catch replays for the weekday show on the NFL on NBC YouTube channel.

NFL depth charts are always changing, whether it's due to injuries, coaching decisions, or performance-related issues. The running back position, in particular, can be tough to stay on top of throughout the season, as the vast majority of teams have gone with some sort of committee approach, featuring two and sometimes even three backs.

Below is a breakdown of each team's backfield to help us determine offenses that are using a single workhorse, committees, and situations to avoid for fantasy. I'll use this space each week to track the numbers and provide some thoughts.

All snap counts and touches are compiled from Pro Football Focus and Pro Football Reference. Opportunities refers to the running back's combined carries and targets.

Red-Zone Carries: Benjamin (12), Kyler Murray (11), Conner (8), Ingram (5), Williams (4), Rondale Moore (1), Greg Dortch (1)

Inside-The-Five Carries: Murray (4), Conner (3), Ingram (2), Benjamin (1), Williams (1), Dortch (1)

Notes: In Week 9, Conner returned from his three-week absence and went on to handle his highest snap share since Week 1. He tied his season-high with five catches and has averaged over six yards per carry his last two games. Conner is starting to show signs of RB2 reliability again, but he still hasn't found the end zone since the opener. Playing in the league's most voluminous offense from a plays per game perspective, Conner is a fine fantasy starter.

Red-Zone Carries: Allgeier (18), Huntley (17), Patterson (14), Marcus Mariota (11), Williams (1)

Inside-The-Five Carries: Patterson (3), Allgeier (3), Mariota (3), Huntley (1)

Notes: Patterson made his return from I.R. in Week 9 and punched in a pair of goal-line touchdowns against the Chargers' league-worst run defense. The Falcons are still running a three-man weave out of the backfield, but they run the ball so much that both Patterson and Allgeier can be valuable fantasy assets. Patterson is a sustainable RB2 going forward.

Red-Zone Carries: Lamar Jackson (14), Drake (14), Dobbins (7), Edwards (3), Davis (3), Hill (3), Devin Duvernay (2), Patrick Ricard (1)

Inside-The-Five Carries: Dobbins (3), Jackson (3), Drake (2), Davis (2), Edwards (1)

Notes: With Dobbins (knee) still on I.R. and Edwards missing Week 9 with a hamstring injury, Drake handled a full workload, as the Ravens blew out the Saints at the Superdome. Drake punched in both of his inside-the-five carries for touchdowns en route to 116 total yards and the two scores. Edwards should be back after the Week 10 bye, but Dobbins needs to miss one more game. Edwards will likely be the better bet for carries as a TD-dependent RB2 in Week 11.

Red-Zone Carries: Josh Allen (16), Singletary (11), Cook (3), Isaiah McKenzie (2), Case Keenum (2)

Inside-The-Five Carries: Allen (7), Singletary (2)

Notes: Hines played an extremely limited role in his first game since being acquired from the Colts, but his snap share is expected to rise the more acclimated he gets in the offense. Singletary has yet to score a rushing touchdown this season. Josh Allen is the Bills' top red-zone and goal-line rusher, leading the team with four rushing scores. If Singletary is going to start losing pass-game reps to Hines, his fantasy value is going to tank.

Red-Zone Carries: Foreman (10), Baker Mayfield (5), Blackshear (2), Brown (2), Hubbard (1)

Inside-The-Five Carries: Foreman (2), Blackshear (2)

Notes: The Panthers got blown out of the building by the Bengals in Week 9, and now Chuba Hubbard is due back from his ankle injury this week. Foreman doesn't offer much as a receiver, so his fantasy value is directly tied to the Panthers being competitive. He gets another date with the Falcons in Week 10 after going 26/118/3 against them in Week 8, but Carolina has to keep games relatively close for Foreman to return RB2 value. He also heavily relies on touchdowns.

Inside-The-Five Carries: Herbert (6), Fields (6), Montgomery (1), Ebner (1)

Notes: The Bears have talked about wanting to get Herbert more involved, but Montgomery has been dominating the snaps between the 20s and the pass-game work. Montgomery's floor is much safer as an RB2, but Herbert does seem to be Chicago's preferred goal-line back. Both are playable in an offense on pace to rush for the most single-season yards in history.

Red-Zone Carries: Mixon (30), Joe Burrow (11), Perine (2), Ja'Marr Chase (1), Trent Taylor (1)

Inside-The-Five Carries: Mixon (12), Burrow (5)

Notes: Mixon's usage is truly elite. He was due for some serious positive touchdown regression, and it happened in Week 9 with five(!) of them against Carolina. Mixon is up to the overall RB6 on the year. He has a complete stranglehold on the carries and targets out of Cincy's backfield. Mixon has at least three catches in every game this season with eight total touchdowns.

Red-Zone Carries: Chubb (25), Hunt (19), Jacoby Brissett (10), D'Ernest Johnson (1)

Inside-The-Five Carries: Chubb (9), Hunt (4), Brissett (2)

Notes: Third among all running backs in red-zone carries with 25, Chubb is probably the best pure running back in the NFL and is coming off his third multi-TD game. Chubb is fantasy's overall RB3. Hunt is still seeing enough to warrant every-week RB3/FLEX starts.

Malik Davis filled in on 33% of the snaps, seeing 10 touches as the Pollard to Pollard's Zeke. Elliott should be expected to return after the Week 9 bye, and the Cowboys have said he'll remain the 1A in Dallas.

Notes: Gordon has reclaimed “starting” duties in Denver, but Murray has remained involved on early downs and short-yardage situations. Now, the Broncos have acquired Chase Edmonds from the Dolphins in the Bradley Chubb trade. Look for Edmonds to fill the Boone role on passing downs and third-down, two-minute situations. It's tough to get excited about Edmonds.

Red-Zone Carries: Williams (24), Swift (3), Reynolds (1), Justin Jackson (1)

Inside-The-Five Carries: Williams (11)

Notes: Swift still doesn't look right, and his ankle clearly isn't 100 percent. It's fair to wonder if we'll ever get the Week 1 version of Swift again this season. Williams has goal-line duties locked up and warrants every-week RB3/FLEX consideration for his touchdown upside. Only Joe Mixon has more inside-the-five carries (12) than Williams' 11 among all running backs.

Red-Zone Carries: Dillon (11), Jones (10), Christian Watson (1)

Inside-The-Five Carries: Dillon (4), Jones (1)

Notes: Jones whiffed in a dream Week 9 spot against the Lions, injuring his ankle in the process. It sounds like he avoided a serious injury, and Jones is expected to play Week 10. Dillon hasn't scored since Week 1 and failed to convert either of his two goal-line looks against Detroit. Dillon still sees just enough work to warrant FLEX starts, but we need TDs from him. When healthy, Jones is the engine of the Green Bay offense as an every-week RB1/2.

Red-Zone Carries: Pierce (20), Burkhead (1), Davis Mills (1)

Inside-The-Five Carries: Pierce (5)

Notes: Thoroughly dominating the playing time and carries, Pierce's role is fantastic. He's the centerpiece of coach Lovie Smith's run-centric offense, even if the offense is bad overall. Pierce is fantasy's RB14 in half-PPR points per game and is in the mix for Rookie of the Year.

Notes: Taylor tried to play through his ankle issue in Week 8 but needed to get it re-taped early on and hasn't looked at all like his 2021 version. Taylor missed Week 9 but returned to practice Wednesday this week. Taylor drafters are just dying for any return on their RB1 investment.

Red-Zone Carries: Etienne (25), Trevor Lawrence (10), Zay Jones (2), Evan Engram (1)

Notes: With James Robinson removed from the offense the last three weeks, Etienne has posted back-to-back-to-back 100-yard rushing games and is fantasy's RB4 since Week 7. He's fifth in the NFL averaging 5.7 YPC. Hasty has taken over RB2 duties in Jacksonville and is worth looking into in deeper formats as a bench stash with only Etienne ahead of him.

Red-Zone Carries: McKinnon (10), Edwards-Helaire (9), Patrick Mahomes (7), Pacheco (6), Travis Kelce (2), Mike Burton (1), Noah Gray (1), Mecole Hardman (1)

Inside-The-Five Carries: Edwards-Helaire (4), McKinnon (3), Pacheco (2), Kelce (1), Gray (1), Hardman (1)

Notes: Edwards-Helaire was fantasy's overall RB4 across Weeks 1-4 but is the RB51 in the four games since. CEH has gotten by solely on lucky touchdown production, as he's seen single-digit carries in 7-of-8 games. He's now coming off a season-low 17% of the snaps last week while McKinnon ran a whopping 50 pass-game routes against the Titans. McKinnon looks like the back to have in Kansas City, but with three guys seeing significant enough snaps and touches, none are reliable fantasy starters. CEH is a low-volume, low-floor RB3/FLEX.

Inside-The-Five Carries: Jacobs (5)

Notes: Jacobs scored six touchdowns with three 140-plus yards rushing games across Weeks 4-7, but in the Raiders' five other games, he's been held below 70 rushing yards with no touchdowns. Jacobs has the playing time and touch volume as an every-week RB2, but he needs the Raiders to be competitive or playing with a lead. At 2-6, that hasn't happened enough. Maybe we'll get more of a look at rookie Zamir White later in the year.

Inside-The-Five Carries: Michel (2), Ekeler (1)

Notes: Ekeler is fantasy's overall RB1 and doing all of the heavy lifting for the Los Angeles offense. Dealing with major injuries all over the roster, Ekeler is the only guy left. He has multiple touchdowns in four of the last five games and 10 total in that span. He's on pace to catch over 120 passes and run for 900-plus yards. Ekeler is carrying fantasy squads.

Notes: The Rams can't block, and they can't find anyone to get the run game going. Akers got back involved in Week 9 but rushed five times for three yards. Rookie Kyren Williams (ankle) is expected to make his debut in Week 10. He's at least worth adding in 12-team leagues.

Inside-The-Five Carries: Mostert (2), Ingold (2), Smythe (1)

Notes: The Dolphins quickly gave up on the Edmonds experiment, trading him to the Broncos in the Bradley Chubb trade last week. They replaced him by acquiring Jeff Wilson from the 49ers. Wilson already knew the offense after playing for coach Mike McDaniel in San Francisco, and Wilson ended up out-snapping and out-touching Mostert in Week 9. Both scored touchdowns. Wilson is probably the preferred RB2 of the duo, but Mostert is involved enough to be a FLEX.

Red-Zone Carries: Cook (16), Mattison (6), Kirk Cousins (3), Justin Jefferson (1)

Inside-The-Five Carries: Cook (6), Cousins (1), Jefferson (1)

With six touchdowns in nine games and playing over 80% of the snaps over the last three games, Cook is a comfortable every-week RB1 as the season's overall RB12. Mattison is a pure stash.

Notes: Kamara got the touchdown monkey off his back in Week 8, finding the end zone three times. He's up to fantasy's overall RB8 in half-PPR since returning from injury in Week 5. The move to Andy Dalton at quarterback has been a major boon to Kamara's pass-game role.

Red-Zone Carries: Carter (16), Zach Wilson (6), Robinson (2), Ty Johnson (1), Braxton Berrios (1), Tyler Conklin (1), Garrett Wilson (1)

Inside-The-Five Carries: Carter (3), Wilson (1), Conklin (1)

Notes: In an offense that wants to run the ball, Carter looks like he'll see RB2/3 volume going forward, though newcomer Robinson's playing time predictably spiked in his second game with the team after a full week of practice. Both scored touchdowns in Week 9's upset of the Bills. Look for the Jets to get Robinson even more involved in the game plan during the Week 10 bye.

Red-Zone Carries: Jalen Hurts (28), Sanders (22), Gainwell (6), Scott (1), Zach Pascal (1)

Inside-The-Five Carries: Hurts (12), Sanders (5), Gainwell (2), Scott (1)

Notes: Fantasy's overall RB15, Sanders is a locked-in every-week RB2 as the lead back in Philly's hyper-efficient rushing attack. Even if Hurts is commanding a lot of the goal-line looks, Sanders' volume is valuable. He's a comfortable fantasy start every week.
