Rumbold shines as Falcons sweep Thales teams

Jan. 13—Among the more surprising entries on the 2023-24 Lee Christian basketball schedule were two games with the two Thales Academy teams, which are 3A members of the Raleigh Area Athletic Conference.

If the Falcons call again next year, both might tell Lee to pick on someone their own size.

Lee opened the season back on November with a road upset of Thales-Rolesville, and on Thursday night, Thales-Apex came to town and Lee defeated them too, as Danny Rumbold pumped in 31 points in a 75-69 victory over the Titans.

Lee Christian, now 7-5 on the season, won its second straight game heading into a Friday contest at winless Bradford Academy. The Falcons are trying to build some momentum going into a challenging Monday night contest at Mid-Carolina Conference leader New Garden Friends.

Rumbold actually didn't have his outside shot working Thursday night, as he made just one of his five attempts from beyond the 34-point arc. However, he drew many fouls from the Titans and was spot-on from the free-throw line, where he made 14 out of 15 tries. He also led the Falcons with seven assists.

One Lee player who did have his jump shot was Chris Farrar, who made four of six 3-pointers and was second on the team with 22 points. Christian Wilson also reached double figures in points with 12, to go along with four steals. Todd Gatten led Lee with 13 rebounds to go along with three points, while William Feaster rounded out the scoring with seven points.

At 22.3 points and 6.1 assists per game, Rumbold, a 5'10" junior, is leading the Mid-Carolina Conference in assists and is second in scoring. He ranks second in the entire NCISAA in assists and fourth in scoring.

The Lady Falcons did not play in this game, but did play at Bradford on Friday night. Both Lee teams will travel to Cape Fear Christian on Tuesday night.
