It's fairly safe to say none of us have a clue what Christmas is going to look like this year, given that the rules surrounding the coronavirus pandemic seem to change on the daily. It appears that even the royal family will be celebrating the big day a little differently too, with reports claiming that Her Majesty (and therefore the rest of her elite clan) will be losing one of their biggest festive traditions.

As written by The Express' royal reporter Richard Palmer, the Queen has made the monumental decision to "abandon going to church for the traditional Christmas Day service at St Mary Magdalene Church on the estate". Why is this so major? Well, it's only the third time ever that she's missed the annual family outing. The first time she was absent dates back all the way to 1953, when she wasn't in the country due to a tour of the commonwealth, the second time being in 2016 when she had a cold.

The decision has been made, unsurprisingly, due to COVID-19 – it's reported that the Queen doesn't want the usual crowds to gather outside the church, hoping to get a glimpse of her, Prince William, Kate Middleton et al. While it's undoubtedly a smart move, we'll miss seeing all their festive outfits.

As for what the Queen and co. will be be doing during the holiday, it's believed she and Prince Philip plan to spend the day in Sandringham, as is tradition. Given that the government have yet to announce whether or not the 'Rule of Six' will still stand, it's tricky to plan beyond that. (We know the feeling).

Meanwhile, despite the ongoing pandemic, which yesterday very sadly claimed the lives of 280 people in the UK, the royals are continuing to get back to work and have been making the odd public appearance. Prince William was spotted drooling through the window of KFC recently and Kate Middleton took her two eldest children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, out for a half term day trip in London.

While life still feels so uncertain, we're choosing to try and focus on the little pockets of joy we know are still certain throughout the upcoming festive period (namely by treating ourselves to a fun advent calendar). Reckon that's a tradition the royals also enjoy?
