ROUNDUP: Union High boys fall to Sewickley Academy; Lady Scots cruise past Obama Academy

Jan. 1—The Union High boys basketball team struggled in the second half Saturday and it proved costly.

The Scotties were outscored by 14 points in the final 16 minutes in a 53-35 loss to Sewickley Academy in the Holiday Bash at Geneva College.

The teams were deadlocked at 9 after one quarter and Union (3-7) trailed 20-16 at halftime.

The Panthers (6-2) pushed the margin to 39-28 after three quarters.

Braylon Thomas tallied a game-best 18 points for the Scotties and Grayson Blakley contributed six.

Nolan Donnelly posted 16 points for Sewickley Academy.

Union travels to Carlynton (1-7) at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the WPIAL Section 1-1A opener for both schools.

Girls Union 57, Obama 37

The Lady Scots raced to a 14-5 lead and pulled away for a win over Obama Academy in the Holiday Bash at Geneva College.

Union (6-5) increased the advantage to 27-15 at the break.

Kelly Cleaver netted a game-high 25 points for the Lady Scots and Kylie Fruehstorfer was next with 18. Cleaver also added 12 rebounds and five steals, while Fruehstorfer chipped in five boards, five assists and five steals.

Bella Cameron and Mia Preuhs recorded five rebounds apiece for the winners, while Preuhs handed out four assists with four steals.

Gi'onna Jimmins scored 18 points to pace Obama Academy.

Union visits Aquinas Academy (9-1) at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. It's the Section 1-1A for both teams.
