ROUNDUP: Lions pick up 12th win; Engineers picked 4th in HCAC baseball

Feb. 7—Junior guard Bentley Delp scored 16 points to lead Marshall to a 45-29 Illinois boys high school basketball victory over host LaSalette Academy on Tuesday night..

Jadon Wallace added nine points and Avery Sheets eight for Marshall (now 12-14).

The Lions will play host to Charleston on Friday, which is Senior Night at Marshall.

College baseball

—Engineers picked to place fourth — In the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference's annual preseason coaches poll, Rose-Hulman was picked to finish fourth while Franklin was predicted to repeat as HCAC champion.

Franklin got 79 poll points and 7 of the 10 first-place votes. Transylvania picked up 70 points and two first-place votes, and Anderson narrowly edged Rose-Hulman with 63 points and the final first-place vote. Rose received 62 poll points. Earlham (43), Bluffton (39), Hanover (34), Manchester (33), Mount St. Joseph (17), and Defiance (10) rounded out the poll.

Rose finished 23-21 overall and 13-9 in conference play in 2023. They won a pair of games in the HCAC tournament before bowing out.

Engineer "players to watch," according to the preseason release, are Colter Couillard-Rodak, Ian Kline, Kade Kline, and Michael Yager. Kade Kline and Yager each earned all-HCAC honors in 2023.

Rose opens its 2024 baseball season with a three-game series at Emory on Feb. 24-25.

College golf

—Lester long-term Rose women's coach — Rose-Hulman athletics announced Wednesday that Jon Lester is now full-time head coach of the women's golf program after serving in that role on an interim basis since August 2022.

Lester has been head coach of the men's golf program since 2015. The men's team won its first conference championship since 1998 under Lester's leadership during the 2021 season. Lester was named the HCAC Men's Golf Coach of the Year. The team also made its first ever appearance in the NCAA Division III men's golf national championships in 2021, placing 21st overall in the 37-team field.

As interim women's head coach, Lester led the team to a first-place finish in the 2023 HCAC championship and 20th place finish in the NCAA Division III national championships. This was the team's fourth straight HCAC title and third straight NCAA Division III championship appearance. Lester also was named the HCAC Women's Golf Coach of the Year for 2023.

Lester enters his 10th year as a member of the Rose-Hulman coaching staff.

College swimming

—HCAC honors Engineer athletes — Rose-Hulman's Catherine Bath and Audrey Hankins have been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Women's Swimmer and Diver of the Week respectively.

Bath won three individual events in a tight dual meet with Transylvania on Saturday. She won the 100- and 200-meter backstroke and the 1,000-meter freestyle. Hankins won the 1-meter and 3-meter diving Saturday.

Meanwhile, Vineet Ranade and Parker Siddons received the HCAC Men's Swimmer and Diver of the Week respectively.

Ranade dominated in Saturday's dual meet win over Transylvania with four event victories. He won the 50 freestyle, the 200 breaststroke and the 200 IM. He also was part of the 200 medley relay team that took first place. Siddons claimed a pair of firsts in the 3-meter and 1-meter diving.

Rose's men's and women's teams will conclude their season with the HCAC championships Feb. 14-17 at the Vigo County Aquatic Center.
