Roundup: Bishop girls defeat Mount Airy in soccer

Apr. 16—MOUNT AIRY — Katelynn Williams, Justine Grimsley, Emilia Pirkl, Emily Silva scored for Bishop McGuinness in a 4-0 victory over host Mount Airy in Northwest 1A action Wednesday.

Pirkl, Silva and Grimsley dished assists. Emily Agejew stopped two shots in goal and Avery Krivis grabbed one save.

Bishop goes to 8-1 overall and 8-0 in the conference while Mount Airy falls to 4-4-1 and 3-4-1.

BASEBALL WESLEYAN, CHRIST SCHOOL

ARDEN — Wesleyan Christian defeated Christ School 15-8 at Christ School on Wednesday.

GLENN, R.J. REYNOLDS

WINSTON-SALEM — R.J. Reynolds blanked Glenn 8-0 in Central Piedmont 4A action Wednesday at Reynolds.

The Demons led 5-0 at the half.

CENTRAL DAVIDSON, LEDFORD

WALLBURG —Central Davidson defeated host Ledford 7-1 in a Central Carolina 2A match Wednesday.

Maddie Callahan scored for the Panthers (0-6 overall, 0-4 CCC), who trailed 4-1 at halftime.

OAK GROVE, SALISBURY

SALISBURY — Salisbury topped Oak Grove 4-1 in Central Carolina 2A play on Wednesday.

Haley Long scored off an assist by Chloe Koper for the Grizzlies (5-3 overall, 2-3 CCC), who trailed 3-1 at halftime.

Avery Ray made 14 saves in goal.

TRINITY, PROVIDENCE GROVE

TRINITY — Trinity fell 5-0 against Providence Grove in PAC-7 2A girls soccer Wednesday at Trinity.

The Bulldogs, who trailed 2-0 at halftime, dropped to 0-6-1 overall and 0-4-1 in the conference.

TENNIS LEDFORD, E. DAVIDSON

WALLBURG — Ledford rolled past East Davidson 9-0 in Central Carolina 2A Conference boys tennis Wednesday at Ledford.

Sam Kruse, Joe Lamb, Rafal Kostraba, Jake Queen and Josh Gross won in singles for the Panthers, who also took the No. 6 singles match in a forfeit.

Lamb/Queen, Kruse/Alex Lopez and Sua Kim/Grant Russell won in doubles.

Ledford improved to 7-0 both overall and in the conference, while East dropped to 1-7 overall and 1-6 in the conference.

OAK GROVE, THOMASVILLE

MIDWAY — Oak Grove swept Thomasville 9-0 in Central Carolina 2A Conference boys tennis Wednesday at Oak Grove.

Eli McNeil, Brady Weisner, Parker Frost and Justin Gadd won in singles for the Grizzlies (4-3), who also took two singles matches and one doubles match by forfeit. McNeil/Nick Morris and Frost/Gadd won in doubles.

The Bulldogs dropped to 0-8 both overall and in the conference.

BISHOP MCGUINNESS, MT. AIRY

KERNERSVILLE — Bishop McGuinness stopped Mount Airy 6-3 in a Northwest 1A match Wednesday at Fourth of July Park.

Winners of the Villains were Luca Pestana, Bobby Peters, Grant Wilson and Josh Hanflick in singles; and the doubles team of Pestana and Peters.

Bishop improved to 6-1 overall and 4-0 in the conference while Mount Airy dropped to 3-5 and 2-3.

SW GUILFORD, PARKLAND

WINSTON-SALEM — Southwest Guilford swept Parkland 9-0 in a Piedmont Triad 3A match at Parkland on Wednesday.

In singles, Trung Nguyen, Grant Prevatt, Rhett Pressley and Mason Drabik took the matches played and the Cowboys won twice in walkovers. Jacob Rosen/Daniel Etheredge and Tim Vo/Tommy Lacey won in doubles.

Southwest goes to 6-2 and 4-1 in the PTC, while Parkland drops to 0-4, all in conference.

WHEATMORE, JORDAN-MATTHEWS

TRINITY — Wheatmore cruised past Jordan-Matthews 8-1 in PAC-7 2A boys tennis Wednesday at Wheatmore.

Jagur Williams, Yoni Mora, Logan Hanneman and Jaxon Kimmons won in singles for the Warriors (5-0 overall, 5-0 conference), who won two in singles and one in doubles by forfeit. Juan Felipe Morales/Jacob Younts won in doubles.

HP CHRISTIAN, GREENSBORO DAY

GREENSBORO — High Point Christian lost 9-0 against Greensboro Day in PTAC boys tennis Tuesday at Sedgefield Country Club.

SOFTBALL WHEATMORE, JORDAN-MATTHEWS

SILER CITY — Jordan-Matthews edged visiting Wheatmore 6-5 in PAC-7 2A action on Wednesday.

Carmen Turgeon went 4 for 4 with two doubles for the Warriors, who rallied to tie it with three runs in the sixth before allowing one run in the seventh. Kynnedy Thrift added a hit and an RBI.

Turgeon struck out five in five innings before giving way to Thrift for the final two innings.

SE GUILFORD, RAGSDALE

JAMESTOWN — Southeast Guilford scored five runs in the top of the seventh and defeated Ragsdale 14-12 in nonconference action Wednesday at Ragsdale.

The Tigers, who scored four in the third and took the lead with four more in the fourth, led 12-9 going into the final inning.

GOLF AT OAK HOLLOW

HIGH POINT — R.J. Reynolds posted a score of 161 and a 10-shot victory over High Point Central on Wednesday at Oak Hollow.

David DeLille of the Bison shot 1-over 37 to take medalist honors. Other counting scorers for Central were Ian White (42), Hunter Busick (47) and Andrew Eskew (52).

Central's girls finished with a 161 total while Reynolds did not field enough golfers for a team score. E.C. Niebauer led the way with a 3-over 39, followed by Maddie Carroll (60) and Morgan Owens (62).

COLLEGE SPORTS HPU WOMEN'S LACROSSE, LONGWOOD

FARMVILLE, Va. — Abby Hormes scored six goals and High Point University crushed Longwood 19-7 in a Big South match Wednesday at Longwood.

HPU (5-6) improved to 3-0 in the Big South, with Hormes scoring 21 goals in those matches. She has 47 for the season. Longwood drops to 1-10.

Ashley Britton added four goals as eight Panthers tallied. Kaely Kyle had a hat trick. Kay Rosselli scored twice. Kylie Holthaus, Katie Hormes, Nicole Pugh and Rachel Foster had single goals.

The Panthers play host to Radford on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

CLARK EARNS SEC TRACK HONOR

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Alabama's Tamara Clark was named the SEC's women's co-runner of the week, the conference announced Tuesday.

Clark — who starred at High Point Central — posted the second-fastest 100-meters time in school history Saturday, crossing the line with an 11.07, which ranks her No. 1 in the nation and puts her just .05 off her own school record.

She also ran legs on the Crimson Tide's champion 4x400m relay and silver medal 4x100m relay. The Tide's 4x100m relay time ranks fourth in the nation this season.

Clark was also included on The Bowerman Midseason Watch List, the award committee announced Wednesday. That award is given annually to the most outstanding male and female NCAA track and field athletes in the country.

WEST COLUMBIA, S.C. — Former Westchester Country Day standout Marshall Lange has signed to play professionally with the Carolina Coyotes of The Basketball League.

Lange played four years at NCAA Division II Newberry College, where he averaged 12.08 points, 3.45 rebounds and 2.30 assists in 113 games. He was SAC Freshman of the Year and named to the All-Freshman team in 2017.

The Coyotes, who play their home games at Glenforest School in West Columbia, South Carolina, won their first game 112-104 against the Atlanta Empire on April 10. Lange had 10 points, two rebounds and two assists.
