Roundup: Big finishes propel Paris, Robinson girls to titles; South boys game, others rescheduled

Feb. 16—Strong third-quarter play powered Paris and Robinson to regional titles in the Illinois High School Association girls basketball tournament on Thursday night.

At the Class 2A Monticello Regional, Paris beat Tolono Unity 41-21. Meanwhile at the Class 2A Fairfield Regional, Robinson defeated Carmi 39-31.

Those regional victories set up a Paris-Robinson clash at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Class 2A Newton Sectional. Maroa-Forsyth plays Teutopolis in Tuesday's 6 p.m. game at Newton. Tuesday's winners play for the Newton Sectional title at 7 p.m. next Thursday.

Paris and Robinson split two regular-season games. The Maroons won on their home floor 35-29 on Jan. 16, while the Tigers won in their gym 45-37 on Jan. 31.

Robinson coach Scott Zane expects a challenging rematch.

"Paris is always a tough opponent because they are very disciplined on offense and defense," Zane said Friday. "They are also difficult to match up against because so many of their players are very versatile. [Paris] Coach [Dave] Tingley always has his teams ready, there is a reason why he has won over 500 games in his career."

Tingley picked up that 500th victory in his 22-year coaching career on Jan. 4 when his Tigers won at Terre Haute South.

Zane sees stout teams in the other side of the Newton Sectional bracket with Teutopolis (19-11) and Maroa (24-6). Teutopolis beat Mt. Carmel to advance, while Maroa topped Sullivan.

"Teutopolis is obviously a great team with a huge winning tradition," Zane said. "They play an incredibly difficult schedule so when they get into the postseason they are battle tested." He's not seen Maroa, but the Trojans 24-win total is impressive.

"I personally believe that the Newton Sectional is a very talented field in which all of the teams are capable of winning," Zane said.

In Thursday's Monticello Regional final, Paris rallied from a 9-8 first-quarter deficit to pull even at halftime with Tolono Unity at 13-13. Then the Tigers (now 21-11) poured in 28 second-half points, while holding Tolono to just eight.

Graci Watson led Paris with 14 points and hit the game's lone 3-pointer. Kailey Young and Macy Bicknell added 10 each for the Tigers.

In Thursday's Fairfield Regional championship, Robinson held a narrow 20-19 lead over Carmi at halftime. Then the Maroons (25-5) outscored Carmi 19-12 in the second half to secure the title.

A trio of Maroons scored in double-figures, led by Katelyn Jones with 12 points, Marisa Zane with 11 and Elizabeth Shea with 10. Robinson has now won 12 of its last 13 games.

Also Thursday in the Class A Bethany Regional, Tri-County fell 49-41 to Tuscola in the championship game. Tri-County — a co-op team that includes Edgar County schools Kansas and Shiloh, as well as Oakland of Coles County — finished 21-10.

Tri-County trailed 24-16 at halftime, then rallied to pull within 34-30 at the end of the third quarter, but Tuscola (27-2) held on in the final period.
