Roos tripped up at home against Paschal

Jan. 19—WEATHERFORD — Following a close road loss to the Trinity Trojans, the Weatherford Kangaroos returned to their home gymnasium to host the Paschal Panthers on a cold Friday night. After they built a 22-16 lead by halftime, the visitors stormed ahead 29-22 after opening the third quarter on a 13-0 run and never trailed for the remainder of the game as Paschal emerged victorious over Weatherford by a final score of 44-36. The Roos were able to keep it close to the end without the services of junior guard Deshaun Lewis, who missed the action with a calf injury.

In the opening quarter, Weatherford closed strongly with a corner 3-pointer from senior guard Kane Chandler with 2:21 remaining. Before the final buzzer of the frame, senior post Keats Bohannon nailed a short jumper that gave the Ros an 11-8 advantage.

Weatherford kept moving the ball crisply and hit open shots as Aidan Fry sank a floater in the lane with 6:31 left before halftime that gave the Roos a 13-10 lead. A few possessions later, Fry broke a 15-all tie with a long ball from the corner at the 1:54 mark, and junior post Brendan Ballard connected on a nifty layup inside to stretch the lead to 20-15 with 53 seconds left. After that, Jude Robertson made a putback layup with 23 seconds that ultimately sent Weatherford into intermission with a 22-16 lead.

However, Paschal flipped the script in the third quarter by racing out of the gates on a 13-0 run, which put the visitors ahead 29-22. At the 2:07 mark of the third, Ballard ended the scoring drought with a putback layup, and Bohannon added a four-point play from behind the arc with 54 ticks to go in the quarter to creep closer. Weatherford entered the fourth quarter trailing Paschal 33-28.

Weatherford was nearly able to pull ahead on several occasions in the fourth quarter, and the team was able to keep the margin razor thin. Fry opened the fourth quarter with a layup, assisted by Bohannon, as he cut hard to the basket at the 6:59 mark. After that, he swished a baseline jumper to pull within 34-32 with 6:22 to go. Then, Ballard drew a foul and knocked down both of his free throws with 4:51 remaining to stay within two points of Paschal at 36-34. Paschal managed to get some breathing room following scores on two consecutive possessions that increased the lead to 40-34 with 2:28 remaining, which forced Weatherford to call a timeout. Bohannon's putback layup with 1:59 to go got Weatherford within 40-36, but Paschal was able to close out the district contest down the stretch at the free throw line.

Ballard scored a team-high 10 points while Fry contributed with nine. Bohannon scored eight points for the Roos while Chandler added seven. Paschal junior Colton Patterson scored a game-high 24 points.

The Roos (15-11, 3-4) will try to end the two-game skid at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Crowley.
