Roland-Story sports round-up: Norse track teams qualify for state in six events apiece

The Roland-Story track teams combined to qualify for state in 12 events during the Class 2A state qualifying meet in Dike May 11.

The Norse girls golf team also had a big week after winning the 2A Region 2B meet at the River Bend Golf Course in Story City Friday. Roland-Story shot a 370 as team over 18 holes to beat Van Meter by 19 strokes for the team championship and earn a spot in the regional finals at the Carroll Municipal Golf Course in Carroll.

The Roland-Story boys golf team advanced one golfer to districts after placing fourth at the 2A sectional meet held at the Rice Lake Golf and Country Club in Lake Mills. The Norsemen shot a 347 over 18 holes to come in behind district team qualifiers Lake Mills (311), Aplington-Parkersburg (320) and South Winneshiek (332).

Here is what we learned from a big week of high school sports competition at Roland-Story.

Roland-Story girls and boys both headed to state in six events

The Roland-Story girls track team got six events through to state at the 2A qualifying meet in Dike Thursday.

The Norse won the sprint medley relay, placed second in the 200, 4x200 and 4x100 and got the 100 and long jump through on time and distance.

Adalyn Sporleder, Kennedy Petersen, Kamryn Lande and Lauryn Kilstofte won the sprint medley in 1:52.23, which ranks eighth in 2A. The same four runners placed second in the 4x200 with a 1:47.97 effort, which ranks sixth in 2A.

Reagan Faber joined Sporleder, Petersen and Kilstofte to take second in the 4x100 with a time of 52.14. That ranks 22nd in 2A.

Lande made it individually in both the 200 and 100. She took second in the 200 with a time of 26.80 and third in the 100 with a 13-second flat time, ranking her 16th in the 200 and 14th in the 100.

Sporleder jumped 16-4 in the long jump to place third at the qualifying meet. She ranks 14th in 2A.

The Roland-Story boys made it to state in the 4x400, 4x800, distance medley, sprint medley and shuttle hurdle relays. Kale Lande also qualified individually in the open 400.

The Norsemen 4x400 team of Heston McIlrath, Hesston Johnson, Ben Greenfield and Lande placed first and ranks ninth in 2A with a time of 3:28.36. The 4x800 team of Greenfield, Johnson, Brayden Kilstofte and Lande took second at Dike and ranks eighth in 2A after running an 8:16.03.

McIlrath, Dillon Lettow, Johnson and Greenfield ran a 3:41.95 in the distance medley to place first at the qualifying meet and rank 13th in 2A. The Roland-Story shuttle hurdle team of Luke Patton, Jake Berggren, Cody Long and Jayden Strum finished in 1:05.10 to place fourth and qualify based on time and the sprint medley quartet of Berggren, Sam Knoll, McIlrath and Lande placed third with a qualifying time of 1:36.31.

Lande has Roland-Story's best chance to medal. He ranks fourth in the 2A boys 400 heading into state after winning at Dike in 50.81.

Carlson sisters lead Roland-Story girls golf to the regional finals

Brinley and Makenna Carlson placed first and second individually Friday to help the Roland-Story girls golf team advance to the regional finals.

Brinley turned in a strong 18-hole round of 81 to dominate the meet individually. She won medalist by six strokes over Makenna, who shot a solid score of 87 to finish five strokes ahead of Des Moines Christian's Courtney Latham and Van Meter's Josie Bemis, who each shot a 92.

Iowa Falls-Alden's Olivia French carded a 94 and Clarion-Goldfield-Dows' Sawyer Morrical and Van Meter's Danielle Jones tied for sixth with identical rounds of 96 as the other golfers to individually qualify for the regional final.

Grace Corcoran tied for 11th with a 99 and Brooke Thompson shot a 103 to place 15th as the other golfers to turn in counted scores for Roland-Story. Gabriella Wakefield finished 21st with a 106 and Eva Corcoran 30th with a 117 for the Norse.

Braylen Loots advances to districts for Roland-Story boys golf team

Loots was the lone golfer to advance to districts from the 2A boys sectional golf meet in Lake Mills.

Loots turned in an 18-hole score of 83 to tie for 10th individually.

Lake Mills' Garrett Ham was medalist with a 69 and Will Steege of Aplington-Parkersburg medalist runner-up with a 73. Austin Stene of Lake Mills (77) placed third, Jace Pruisner of Aplington-Parkersburg (78) fourth, South Winneshiek's Carson Wenthold (79) (fifth). Aplington-Parkersburg's Caleb Campbell (81) and Clarion-Goldfield-Dows' Cale Kirstein and South Winneshiek's Braeden Todd (81) tied for sixth.

Lake Mills' Dane Koch placed ninth with an 82.

The other scores for Roland-Story came from Jack Birkland (87), Ben Greenfield (87), Hayden Janssen (90), Hayden Eslick (99) and Nels Hanson (100).
