Rockwall Jackets reach region finals; fall to Lake Ridge

Mar. 8—LUFKIN — The Rockwall Yellowjackets reached the Region II-6A basketball finals for the first time in school history before they fell 48-39 to Mansfield Lake Ridge.

Rockwall, which had finished third in District 10-6A, surprised many with its long run in the playoffs that included a 51-39 win over Houston Nimitz in the region semifinals.

Freshman Mason Shephard, who hit a game-winning 3-pointer in Rockwall's 54-51 region quarterfinal win over Wylie East, led the Jackets against Nimitz with 17 points. Corbin Brown scored 11 points and D'von Turner tossed in 10.

Rockwall pulled to within 41-39 against Lake Ridge midway through the fourth quarter before the 32-6 Eagles closed out the victory with a 7-0 run to earn their first trip to the state tournament in San Antonio.

Turner scored 14 points for the Jackets, who finished the season at 21-15.
