Actor Rob Lowe and jewelry designer Sheryl Berkoff celebrate 30 years of marriage this year.
The couple has two sons: Matthew, a lawyer, and John, an actor and writer.
It's no secret that Rob Lowe has had incredible success as an actor. He achieved heartthrob status as a member of the Brat Pack with roles in 1980s movies like The Outsiders and St. Elmo's Fire. His career continued with standout performances in TV dramas, such as The West Wing, and a comedic turn in Parks and Recreation. And now, he currently stars on the Fox show 9-1-1 Lone Star as firefighter captain Owen Strand. What people might not know is that all this time, he has also had a wonderful marriage to his wife, jewelry designer Sheryl Berkoff.
Sheryl first met Rob on a blind date in 1983, but after going on a few times, they decided not to start a serious relationship. That changed years later when the two reconnected when they were both working on the set of the movie Bad Influence in 1989.
This second time was the charm for the couple; they fell in love and got married two years later on July 22, 1991.
In a 2014 interview with Haute Living, Rob candidly talked about how his life changed after meeting Sheryl. "I had met my now wife, Sheryl, and was attempting my first try at monogamy — which was not really in my nature at the time — and I wasn’t able to do it. It made me examine how I was living my life. That led me to getting sober, which led me to changing my life — giving me everything I now have."
Everything includes two sons: Matthew, 28, a lawyer, and John, 26, an actor and writer who works alongside his dad on 9-1-1 Lone Star. The two starred with their dad in The Lowe Files, a 2017 reality show that found them searching for unsolved mysteries. And they often help model pieces from their mom's luxury jewelry line, Sheryl Lowe Jewelry.
In the past, Rob has been open about how the whole family attends therapy to strengthen their bond. "The one thing, though, that has been a part of our family is the notion of therapy as a sort of proactive, non-shaming [practice], like a trainer," he told AOL. "We think of going to therapy or talking to a therapist ... it's literally no different from a chiropractor.
He also added that communication can still be a struggle for him and Sheryl, but in an interview with Rachel Ray, he made it clear that his wife was his best friend. He reiterated that sentiment on the Goopfellas podcast in 2019, revealing it's the key to the longevity of their marriage. "It really is all about who you pick. I always say to people, 'If there's any way to marry your best friend, do it.' 'Cause the rest of it comes and goes, and I was very lucky there."
Most recently, Rob joked about his upcoming 30-year wedding anniversary while guest-hosting Ellen. "My beautiful wife Sheryl and I are celebrating our 30-year wedding anniversary," he said. "Everybody's asking me what I'm planning to do, and I got some ideas. I thought that maybe my wife and I could play 18 holes of golf. On one hand, my wife hates golf, but on the other hand, I love it, and marriage is a compromise." He continued, "And then I thought the day should involve something my wife likes, so I'm thinking spa treatments, a nice lunch, walk on the beach. And while she's doing that, I'll be playing golf."
Sounds pretty great to us.
